Was Palin the Worst VP Pick Ever?
Publius' Forum ^ | 11/21/07 | Warner Todd Huston

We have gone through the first round of internal recriminations with the recent excoriation of Governor Palin by those “unnamed” McCain staffers. But, as we all know, Gov. Palin was the subject of heated debate even among Republicans long before the election. One common complaint was that she was the "worst" VP candidate pick "ever." But, was she really?

A look at recent history can only serve to deflate that ridiculous claim. There have been far worse picks than Gov. Palin and only the extremely emotional state of mind that this past election ginned up could obscure the historical record. Two of those picks in particular make Palin's choice rather inspired by comparison.

In the first case George Wallace's pick of general Curtis LeMay for his vice presidential pick in 1968 was a disaster and in the second George McGovern's pick of Thomas Eagleton for his in 1972 was even worse -- both were far more disastrous than Palin's. There was some speculation in the media that Palin would suffer Eagleton's fate, but the situations of the two just don't bear any resemblance at all...

I totally agree on all points. That sums it up nicely.

Personally, I thought her presser at the turkey farm where real turkeys were really getting slaughtered right behind her was brilliant.

Everyone who saw that and enjoys their thanksgiving turkey this year will think of her. I think of Palin and I think, now that’s conservative realism!

Forget all that panty-waist “compassionate conservatism” that got us in this hole!

As per FR tradition, after a careful review of her pictures, not guilty. Not even a suspect.

"There have been far worse picks than Gov. Palin..."

The real question is "has there ever been a better one?"

(Not if you love this country)

True, same here as well, but the numbers show that no matter how much people loved Governor Palin, Conservatives just did not like John McCain...period..and did not turn out to vote.

For me, I think Gov Palin has “seen the political elephant” and is shunning national politics now, if anyone could boost Chambliss in GA, Sarah Palin could and she just is having none of it.

I don’t blame her at all.

Was Palin the worst VP pick ever?

No. FAR FROM IT. But her running mate was possibly the worst presidential candidate ever.

John McCain didn't quite understand the great Richard Nixon who said, "You don't win an Election on a diet of dishwater and milk toast".

Sad. McCain should have ripped into NObama from every angle. Sarah tried. John was absent.

Just pump her full of a couple of liters of testosterone and you can get that deep, resonating masculine voice you so need.

Or, maybe use electronic shenanigans the way Obama's boys did.

Amen! I agree. The only fault I can find is that by comparison she made McCain look even more like a doddering old man unable to come up with fresh bold ideas.

“I ought to mention this to my liberal family members at Thanksgiving but I think there would be a food fight.”

Good thought. I’ve got some lib family members that we’re getting together with for Thanksgiving and a good food fight would relieve the tedium. (We won’t be at our house.)

The question should be was McCain the worst nominee ever?

Let me sum it up for you a little differently.

We are a sick country where a polished half witted turd is considered qualified to be the Commander in Chief, but a self-made woman of exceptional intelligence is lacking qualifications because she lacks “presentation skills”! Heidi Klum for President 2012!

She had the worst press, but I think she’s got a lot of promise. How can that question be asked when we’ve had Eagleton and Spiro Agnew?

No self-respecting conservative ever took McCain seriously (a RAT is a Rat…is a rat…even if he/she has an (R) after the name. Sarah is the only reason I even bothered to vote in the first dammed place.

I’ll give this young lady my fullest support in years to come. I know it won’t mean much in 2012 with 30 million newly sworn-in RATs (illegal’s & family), but this is the stuff that revolutions are made of.

May God have mercy on this once great nation…

Sheesh. The election was over two weeks ago and the scumbags are still writing about Sarah Palin?

Articles like this are designed, I believe, to destroy her before she has a chance to grow in terms of her power and popularity. With four years do this kind of thing, they will do it.
