As it turns out, swaying from conservative principles doesnt always pay off for a Republican presidential candidate. Sen. John McCain learned that lesson that hard way.
Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a senior policy adviser to McCains failed campaign, said Nov. 19 that McCains support for the $700 billion bailout of the financial sector was the key strategic blunder of the entire campaign.
We also make mistakes, Holtz-Eakin told a group of conservatives at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. Theres no doubt about it--20/20 hindsight. I think the key strategic policy error of the entire campaign, that is mine, is believing that the bailout bill would help.

I will agree with you...If obama had suspended his campaign, and not McCain, we would have heard from MSM “McCain goes on Letterman while ECONOMY tanks...McCain laughs it out while population in the unemployment lines blab la bla”
McCain was in a losing position, the MSM wanted to elect its first Black President....thats it...
McCain could have walked on water...would make no difference...MSM was a +10% for Obama in this election...thats it..
I think Morris must have thought that House republicans would follow McCain’s lead as well, in the hope of stopping the Obama juggernaut. In this, as in most things, Dick “Condi vs. Hillary” Morris was wrong.
Thanks....I didn’t think she would be for it.
Showing McCain to be a puppet with his finger air.
Very well said. Straight to the point. With your permission, I would like to use this in my blog.
if mccain won, at least our troops would have a commander in chief they could trust. people forgot about this completely
Even the Libs are laughing at the auto executives arriving in corporate jets to beg for a government handout.
AMEN
I don't think it is fair for you, ari-freedom, to continue to beat this dead horse. She is a principled conservative whom, I believe, left free to be her own woman would be pro free market and anti socialist solutions for the present crisis.
I really question what you are trying to prove.
maybe they did it to save capitalism :) If they support the bailout then forget the unions, the bailout will never pass.
And here we were all thinking the strategic blunder was picking Sarah Palin.
McCain’s other strategic blunder, and a much worse one, was backing amnesty for illegals. Something like 76% of people polled oppose it. It was a wedge issue, and McCain squandered it.
MCCAIN HIMSELF was the “strategic blunder”.
DING DING DING!!! We have a WINNAH!
If McCain had any principles he would of opposed it on the 150 Billion in Pork attached to it alone. Pork attached to it as the only way to buy off support for the bill.
What happened with the”
The “pork stops here” McCain?
The “I’ll take names, we’ll know who they are” McCain?
The “Maverick”?
Yep with that little piece of bailout theatre, McCain proved himself to be untrustworthy...the R turnout in key redstates proves that many conservative R’s finally just refused to vote for McTool! I hate the guy...he is dead to me!
Heck, if any one of those morons had even bothered to check here on FR at the time, then they would have seen all of us jumping up and down, screaming that McCain was flushing his newly revieved campaign down the toilet by doing what he did.
Someone please tell Red State to add Holtz-Eakin to the Leper list...
The list of what he did wrong is too long, lets list what he did right(it will be much shorter)
She opposed mccain on ANWR and embryonic stem cells and other things. She was supposed to be a maverick. Why couldn’t she oppose him on this or at least explain what was going on?
It was very disappointing...I gave her the benefit of the doubt after the Gibson interview but she really lost me during the Hannity interview.
