Mitt Romney Takes on Detroit

By Garance Franke-Ruta

The race for 2012 is already on in the Republican Party, and today failed 2008 contender Mitt Romney appeared to take a stand sure to complicate any future presidential bid. In an op-ed bluntly titled, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," the former Massachusetts governor argued against the automobile salaries and pension systems that have for decades helped define the good life in industrial Michigan, where Romney won the GOP primary this winter and where his father was once governor.

You are trying to get people who don’t worship Palin kicked off while you’re group continues to slander Romney, the guy who had a real tough job dealing with evil liberals, and he did a pretty good darn job too. I don’t know where you are coming from, but what makes you think that Romney supporters aren’t conservative? What makes you think that any of us are connected in any way with Romney? I know I am not connected in any way with him. I just liked it that I thought he had very good potential to be an excellent President. He certainly is qualified, he is a brilliant man. He is very articulate too. It seems like people like you don’t want him to ever be president because you are afraid he might be a good president and you would be wrong. I’m not like that at all. If by chance, Palin ever becomes President and does a good job, I will be happy. I just want what’s best for the country. But until that happens, I still say she’s not qualified. She has used her looks to get where she is, and you know it. So stop kidding yourself.

The "site admin" is anti-Romney "as well"????? You DOLT!! Jim Robinson, who you refer to as a "site admin," is an American hero of the first order to whom we are all hugely indebted. There would be no such thing as a FReeper or Free Republic if not for this "site admin."

My stars!!! The words you use to describe a brilliant individual who created Free Republic and whose deep and abiding belief that abortion is, ultimately, murder in the eyes of God, makes his vision clear and truly righteous, hence this fantastic website, and hence a major factor (though assuredly NOT THE ONLY FACTOR) of his deep and abiding contempt for Romney. It is a contempt that I and many other conservatives share. Romney is BAD NEWS FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, and he would have been a worse nominee, even worse for the Republican party future, than McCain. I voted for McCain because of Palin; had Romney been the nominee, I would have actively worked to see him defeated. He is, knowingly or innocently I don't know nor care, the antithesis of conservative principle and a Trojan Horse, wittingly or unwittingly, that threatens to betray entirely the Republican party. One of the only things McCain did right was to pass up Romney as a running mate.

Yipe-o-rooni! "site admin" .... !!!!

Excuse me, I hate to break it you, but I don’t read the liberal newspapers or watch the liberal news. These were my own observations, despite listening to Rush and watching Fox News. Sorry to break it to you. But did it ever occur to you that maybe they got it right just this one time? They did. Palin was another of McCain’s gimmicks. That’s all it was. Oh sure, Palin will try to run with it, she is ambitious, she is willing to neglect her baby to get what she wants, that’s clear. I feel so sorry for her baby. That’s from the heart. You can put your spin on it all you want, but you know deep down I’m right. Sorry to break it to you. Someone had to.

Indeed. I at least have the IQ points not to openly insult our hosts and make baseless accusations against them. But, please, do keep it up. I always enjoy a good ZOT of liberal trolls. :-)

It’s Massachusetts. Liberals don’t work. That can hardly be blamed on Romney.

I understand everyone’s suspicion over his past, but at least he says all the right things without really pulling punches(tho he does ramble too much).

No I don’t, if anything I look at him as a father figure. Sure he is handsome but in a fatherly way. It’s really not an issue, but it sure is with Palin, they marketed her like she was a Hollywood star, the clothes expenditure proved it. That was what woke me up. Up until then I kept overlooking all of her lack of qualifications, the neglecting of her maternal duties, but the clothes did it, it made it too obvious. That did it. They knew exactly what they were doing. McCain was shameless. No wonder why he lost, he has lousy leadership qualities.

Deep down, I know you are a foolish woman who personifies why our nation’s Founders were wise in not giving women the vote. And this is coming from a red-blooded American female who respects the privacy and dignity of how families deal with life, which quite obviously YOU DO NOT. You assume that becasue Palin does not have the same child-rearing philosophy you do, that she is “neglecting her baby.” God save us from women like you.

"Postings directed against FR favored candidates during the primaries were deleted, and many posters banned."

Correction: Many people who supported liberal causes like abortion or abortionist candidates were banned or left because FR is a conservative website and as such is staunchly pro-life, pro-God, pro-family, pro-liberty, pro-constitution, pro-limited government, pro-security, pro-defense and pro-America.

FR's entire reason for being is to promote conservative candidates and conservative causes. Liberals and moderates are shunned. Of course FR admin favors conservative candidates! Wouldn't have it any other way.

Posters who favor abortion, gay marriage, gun grabbing, restrictions on religious freedoms, open borders, etc, or favor big government, entitlements, confiscatory taxation, social engineering, weakened security or defenses, etc, or favor candidates who take these non-conservative positions are probably pretty uncomfortable here as they feel the heat of thousands of conservatives objecting to their moderate/liberal posts.

One such poster went so far as to suggest that conservatives have held their boot to the neck of the GOP for far too long and that abortion, God, guns and gays will never ever be important planks to the GOP again.

Got news for all who think this way. Eliminate any of these conservative planks and the GOP goes poof. Without traditional conservatism, the GOP means nothing. A party made up of McArnolds, McRudys and McRomneys is worthless. Just say no to big government moderate "conservatism."

The GOP is not even a fiscally conservative party anymore. And many top Republicans are now pushing global warming, gay rights, open borders, big government, big spending, etc. Suggest the party gets back to Reagan conservatism before it's too late.

Too bad that because of Romney you would have helped to elect Obama, at least I get to sleep at night knowing that I would have never done that. My country is more important then me. It was supposed to be “Country First?” Wasn’t it? How can you say that Obama would have been better then Romney? Why? What did Romney do that was so terrible? Oh, I know, he used to support abortion, but then was converted to be pro-life. Yes, I can understand your reasoning. We will not, I repeat, not accept any people who have converted to being pro-life! No, we will not. And how do you expect to grow the conservative base with this line of thinking? Please tell me, I am very interested in finding out. I don’t like Palin, not one bit, but I voted for her anyways. That’s the way it should be. No one should ever stand by and have a temper tantrum and allow someone like Obama to be elected without trying to stop it.

I will.

#1 - Ann Coulter and Tom Tancredo endorsed him.

#2 - John McCain hates his guts and attacked him far more viciously than anyone else, including Obama.

That is all you really need to know to support Romney.

I stated a simple truth, that’s not vile. But the extent that people go to slander Romney, they must twist the truth to do it. But there was nothing to twist, I stated a simple fact. Rush today said that conservatives need to stop compromising, why can’t people listen to his adivce, more importantly, why can’t Rush take his own advice. Palin isn’t a conservative, she is a feminist. The fact that her children take a back seat to her career proves it. I didn’t have to say anything complicated or post a bunch of links to make a twisted point. My statement was very straightforward.
