GOP applauds Hillary as potential secretary of state
Newsday ^

Posted on 11/16/2008 6:35:21 PM PST by mathwhizz

Hillary Clinton would be "a very good selection" as secretary of state, the Senate's second-ranking Republican, Jon Kyle of Arizona, said in an interview with Fox News Sunday morning. "It seems to me she's got the experience. She's got the temperament for it. I think she would be well received around the world," Kyl said.

Sen. Byron Dorgan (R, N.D.) told Fox he didn't think she would have trouble winning confirmation. "She's worked across the aisle, has good bipartisan relationships" and "would have instant credibility around the world," he added. The U.S. has "a lot of relationships to repair and a lot of work to do, so I think she'd be a fine choice."

Obama and Clinton have done nothing to tamp down speculation on the widely leaked news that she traveled to meet with him in Chicago Thursday and discussed the possibility of the State Department job. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is also reported to have met with Obama last week and others, including Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, are reportedly also being considered for the post.

Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told the World Economic Forum's India meeting he thought giving Clinton the job "would be an outstanding appointment," adding it would also show "great courage" on Obama's part.

In an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said such an appointment "could be a great move."

There are only 100 people to buy off in the Senate. She’s got a good 3 terms left in her, and that’s time to consolidate a real power base. At this point, she’ll never be a viable presidential candidate ever again. 4 years as Senator, and she’s out.

And then what does she do. Write memoirs?

If I were here counselor, I wouldn’t advise her to leave the Senate for anything short of Scotus.

It WILL get her out of the Senate, will it not? They aren’t applauding for her sake.

Gets her out of New York and the Senate. At least, that’s something to applaud.

She might (might, I say) be better than Half-bright.

The spineless cowards in the Republican party have yet to locate their long lost balls No, the Repubs located them, they just cut them off to hang them on the Capitol Christmas, er, I mean Holiday tree, as a sign of good will and a promise to be bipartisan.

heh heh heh. Noooo, I think it is very, very smart for the GOP to applaud the appointment of Hitlery.

Hussein is going to rue the day he allowed that trial balloon to leak. :)

She is objectionable but not as objectionable as most of the possibilities would be. This way she is out of the Senate and we probably will not have to wororyabouther running for prez again. I think it is a good move for the GOP. How far we have fallen that I say this! Maybe Rudy can run for the Senate.

You have plenty of company.

Unless the Republican Party moves, across the board, HARD to the right, they may continue to exist, but they will do so without their traditional base.

Why would that take her out of a future presidential run? Wouldn’t she then have a high-profile executive position on her resume?

She might (might, I say) be better than Half-bright.

Only in the fact that she hasn't been seeped in that internationalism Albright was. Other than that, they seem pretty similar in temperament.

Call me crazy, but I actually think that Hillary loves this country and would not necessarily sell us all out.

Who knew that Hillary was the lesser of two evils in this election?

“Doesn’t Hussein have the power to fire her if he feels like it?”

I think that could happen. The dislike between the obamas and clintons was obvious. It would be the equivalent of twisting the knife...and she would have no senate seat to run back to.

"what’s embarrassing is that Hillary may be better than republican picks such as James Baker, Colin Powell and Condi Rice"

That's exactly what I am saying; those "Republicans" are what the Party consists of today, and they are nowhere NEAR a Conservative idea.

Hillary is no doubt as good as anyone else he would select, but honestly how much is that saying?
