Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is batting down the hype that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin heads into 2012 as the frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination.
Palin energized the Republican base after GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) tapped her as his running mate and she has tried to preserve her high public profile since Election Day.
But Gingrich, an architect of the Republican revolution of 1994, took Palin down a notch, asserting that she would not become the party’s leader, as some have predicted.
“I think that she is going to be a significant player,” said Gingrich during an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation”. “But she’s going to be one of 20 or 30 significant players. She’s not going to be the de facto leader.”
Since the defeat of the GOP ticket, Palin has pursued an aggressive media strategy, scheduling a full slate of interviews to keep her face on television.

Rush Limbaugh for RNC Chairman. He is aggressive and doesn’t back down (a la Howard Dean). He has the ear of the common people, the “grass roots,” which most RNC chairmen have badly lacked recently. He can mix with the rich and superrich; he knows business. His business model, while perhaps not directly applicable to political organization, shows that he understands what it takes to sell the product. He would instantly have media access that no one else would have, and if the Dems enact the “fairness doctrine,” this would be one way to guarantee they don’t shut him up.
Rush might (half-heartedly) say "I can't take the pay cut," but in fact this isn't a government position and he wouldn't have to.
If they do not change now, it is the time for the Conservative Party.
yes. She raised the sales tax to pay for a sports center and she raised taxes on oil companies.

I don’t think they pay income tax in Alaska, do they? Was this in place before she was elected Governor.
I am not making excuses for anyone to raise taxes but I do know New Hampshire had a higher sales tax when they didn’t pay income taxes. I am now 100% certain.

I think he was patronizingly cutting all of the governors—in his eye, his competition for the ‘12 nomination—down to size. (Sure, with a little extra kick at Palin as the most threatening to him of the group.)
He essentially is saying this one has this little area of expertise, while that one has that little area of expertise; you bundle all these little narrow-area governors up together and you have team leadership. Unstated implication: broad, overarching, individual leadership comes from a big-picture guy in DC like himself.
One of the many reasons we can regret George W. Bush is that he has made people like Sarah Palin unelectable as President for a good long time.
Americans will not come back to the Republican Party until we offer leaders whose seriousness, intellectual heft and comfort in complex and diverse world is simply beyond dispute. For all her admirable qualities, three years of part-time studying policy in Anchorage is not going to get Sarah Palin to that level.
8 or 12 or 16 years down the line, Palin will either be at that point, or Americans will once again be prepared to be persuaded that in some cases, judgment and morality are the equal of intellect in governance. But not by 2012, for sure.

I never thought of it that way but so true. Well increasing the sales tax is not acceptable. I hope she rethinks this strategy. It is a lose-lose. Thank you for the insight.

besides, a sports center is not a legitimate function of govt.
1. His positions and strategies are too often theoretical and imparactical.
2. He usually wusses out when directly confronting adversaries in dialog.
A liberal ALWAYS SAYS “ hits the poor the most” joygrace.
But think a minute: a sales tax is THE SAME FOR EVERYONE.
In fact the “poor” pay less because they spend less.
When a liberal tells you a tax “ hits the poor the most” they mean it isn’t progressive- chraging more from those with higher income.
Liberals don’t like The Governor.
They’ll even try to make the fees Alaska charges the oil companies sound like taxes.
Free Republic is a great place, but you can’t turn your mind off and get the full benefits.

I do know that NEWT is not the future of the GOP, and Sarah Palin is certainly one of 4-5 top voices/leaders even if we shouldn’t annoint her for 2012 just yet.
I agree with you 110%, seems a few folks think they can win something with a shout down. I don't believe there is any historicl proof of that happening. That being said I would not vote for her.
