Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, the titan of Alaska politics convicted of felony charges last month, fell behind by more than 800 votes Wednesday as the count resumed in his re-election bid.
Democrat Mark Begich, the two-term mayor of Anchorage, began the day down more than 3,200 votes but went up by 814 as officials resumed their counting of early and absentee ballots. The tally was 132,196 to 131,382.
Neither side was claiming victory or conceding defeat, with tens of thousands of outstanding ballots.
"I've always said that this would be a close race," Begich said in a statement. "I'm confident that Alaskans, like the rest of the country, want a new direction in Washington, and ultimately that will be reflected in the results."
Stevens' campaign did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

“Dont get me wrong, this is shaping up to be a real bad time in our history but Im not cashing in the chips yet.”
That’s right we’ll survive. We survived the Carter years; we’ll survive this. The Dems are itching to over-reach, especially spurred on by the moveon.org crowd. They’ll go too far and it will cost them. The dims will have to defend the lion’s share of Senate seats in 2010 and we’ll recoup a lot then.
Maybe this is where Palin steps in, exerts some leadership and helps select “the best” candidate to run and ‘help’ the others to know they should step aside. Aside from Young and Palin, is there another Republican candidate who clearly would do very well?
and...............
What’s worse, a felonious crook and old man winning for the GOP or another left wing lib for Reid to boss around?
Government is broke that’s for sure.
It was Begich up by three votes yesterday afternoon. He is up by 800+ as of this morning after counting the early votes which were expected to trend D. Absentee votes have still not been counted.
Well, I vote here, so what I think matters.
If you don’t vote here......
If you voted for a convicted felon, then nufsed.
She tried to have Randy dismissed after she was elected the GOV and was told by the (R) party that is was
A) None of her business (and it's not, really)
B) Randy was elected by members of the (R) party, so pppptttttt.
C) if and when the (R) party has another election, maybe Randy will get bounced - maybe.
FWIW, Randy is the reason Silly Sara quit her job as O&G commish - an act that eventually led to her utterly failed shot at the WH.
So, no, Sara has little, if any, say about what goes on the (R) party. Maybe if she hadn't called the entire (R) party a bunch of corrupt (deleted) she might have actually had someone listen to her. She burned that bridge with napalm some time back.
In the end, Mark (may fleas infest his socks) will win on votes counted, Ted will quietly go to jail, where he will die a broken old man and Silly Sara will become a very small footnote in the history books.
As for me (as they say in the moovies) why, you see me and a very large number of folks walking into the sunset (and the division of elections) to change our party affiliation from (R) to Independent.
... and who are the “egos” that will be running. Outside of SP the only other guy I am familiar with is a guy named Halford....I don’t know if he’s still serving as a legislator. Are there any veterans among the “egos”?
Andrew (sour grapes) Hal-crow
Randy (dumb-a$$) Re-der-ick, heavy on the ick
Sean (No, I AM important) Par-nell(y)
and the usuall Barr/Ron Paul type loons.
Gonna buy me some extra popcorn, this one will be a doozy - but only if Ted wins the elections AND loses his court case.
Which at this stage is looking less likely to be any issue each hour.
Politics in AK can be a contact sport.
Don’t forget Vick Vickers-if he hasn’t already moved back to Florida...
No problemo! ;-)
