Hi all, I check in on the Canteen threads very rarely but I am very proud of all of you for keeping these threads going.

I want to share a funny yet sort of sad story with you. My brother-in-law did two tours in ‘Nam as a Marine and stayed in the Marine Reserves for years. He’s a great guy and is doing well.

Anyway, he gave us some K rations (is that the correct word?) for a camping trip we were taking. I was 5-6 months pregnant with our first child and we both decided we needed to quit smoking. We drove way up north in Wisconsin with our camping gear and no cigarettes.

Well, we opened the first package of the rations and ther was a 4-pack of Marlboros. We smoked them. We wemt fishing. By the time our trip was over we smoked more than we ate, we were opening all the rations for the smokes.

I’m not blaming the military, I find it funny, especially since we were opening the rations in advance for the cigarettes.

My son turned out fine, he’s 32, is 6’3” tall and teaches math and physics.

I don’t mean to bore you but it’s one of those memories that one never forgets. I caught 5 walleye in one day and my husband and I no longer smoke.

The food wasn’t too bad either.

Oh Jean that is a funny story!

You caught 5 walleye in one day & no longer smoke....I call that a success as well as a fun memory.

Thank to you BIL for his service to this great country & to you for joining us this evening!

That makes me wonder.....does the military supply cigarettes these days?
