You Don't Have Mail

Competition: For the first time in its history, the U.S. Postal Service is considering layoffs. Imagine that — a unionized work force passing into obsolescence.

After 233 years of managing a government-protected monopoly, reality has struck the post office. The Federal Times is reporting that "Postmaster General John Potter told union leaders that as many as 16,000 employees" could be laid off.

A Postal Service spokesperson said layoffs are not imminent. But that's only because the union contract makes layoffs difficult. An absence of urgency should not be taken as a sign of health.

"We lost $2 billion and, like any other business, we have to stay afloat," said Lavelle Pepper, a post office representative from Shreveport, La., putting the problems of the USPS, which has recorded even worse losses in the past, in clear perspective.

The Postal Service employs 685,000 workers who are handling a diminishing volume of mail as domestic industry leaders such as FedEx and United Parcel Service provide better services and do it with less. While the USPS squanders 80% of its revenue on payroll, UPS spends roughly 55% of its income and FedEx about 40% on wages and salaries.

Feel free to call for competition! In the lines of ‘business’ that are competitive, like Express Mail and parcels, the USPS has a small share of the market, and are able to maintain that share (despite the incredible costs brought on by allowing government workers to unionize) because they already go to (nearly) every home, every day. If that part of the business wasn't protected, there would be places where no one will deliver mail. That was the Australian experience with privatization, where just after it was implemented all the mailboxes (like out blue streetcorner boxes) were removed, and delivery was reduced in rural areas. Privatization would certainly mean that some wouldn't get mail delivery; that may be good or bad (depending on your point of view), but Congress would have to change the law for that as well. One thing that stops them is the number of their constituents who wouldn't get the campaign ads anymore ;-)

Amend the Constitution, ding-a-ling. Good luck with that.

Why don't you rant and rave about the Education or Energy departments?

BTW, is your attitude about the fact that your kid looks like the mailman?

Wassa matter? Someone wanting to downsize your tax paid government income rubbing you raw? You work for the government parasites and don’t like someone telling you what’s up?

Too bad. Go get a real job.

My position in the big, bad pharmaceutical industry is holding up just fine.

Hey Buc, start demanding that your federal tax paid parasites raise the cost of a stamp to $1.00.

That might help you sustain your generous tax paid benefits!.

I bet I don't use ten stamps a year. There's this thing called the internet for most tasks that formerly required postage.

As far as tax-paid benefits, I'm waiting for your check. After all, you're so worked up about it.

They can close the closest one to me, right after they close yours.

I actively avoid it and go to one of two other nearby ones that can handle a customer load. Mine seems to always have a line out the door, only one or two stations open (out of 7 or 8), and what appear to be “managers” wandering aimlessly in the back.

That said, mail delivery around here is pretty good. But the P.O. itself is a loser.

Those line of stupid tax payers getting you down?

Tell your boss they should bump the cost of a stamp to $1.00. That way maybe you’ll get a tax paid raise, and alleviate your desire to kill everyone in the PO.

I am not on the USPS payroll and I don’t use the USPS unless I have to, since my local office and delivery person are seriously not user friendly.

The Post Office is in the Constitution and without a consititional amendment is not going away. I agree it could use some wholesale reform

Until there is a viable competitor for ALL of its coverage, eliminating it makes no sense

In downtown Oceanside, CA they have the old post office. They built a larger one 8 blocks away on the other side of the freeway. Next to the old PO is a mail box +

You don't get it slick. Ya see that's why the fed/gov wants to raise your postal costs. Everyone is using the internet, and they want more of your money.

Shazzam!!

Then let's remove the middleman and let UPS and FedEx fight it out with maybe a few start-ups to boot.

Uh huh..... And I suppose you'd be willing to explain to the folks out in the sticks why they can't get mail delivery anymore....

Well that's nice.

But the fact is, the GD government has no damn business being in the mail delivery business.

None!

You seem to have an inordinate interest in the government controlling the mail.

I find suspect and likely you have an interest or conflict here in supporting the government in regards to them delivering the mail while raping the tax payers.

I am quite sure you have an interest somewhere here. Of course, you’ll never admit it.

When I am expecting something that won’t fit in the mailbox, I have to have it delivered to a local professional mail station and pay a few bucks.

This is because the USPS is too lazy to ring a bell. It is left in the lobby and subsequently stolen by the janitor.

Several fellow tenants complained to the Postmaster General, but nothing came of it.
