Arrested Blogger Identified: Tarek Mehanna
UPDATE 10/21/2009: Mehanna arrested again! This time for plotting terror on US soil.
SNIPPET: Begin original post
The al Qaeda supporter and blogger arrested by the FBI earlier this week has been identified as Tarek Mehanna. Mehanna was arrested as he attempted to leave the country on charges that he had lied to the FBI about prior knowledge of another Muslim bloggers, Daniel Al-Jughaifi Maldanado, plans to travel from Egypt to Somalia to join the jihad. Maldanado is now in federal prison after being convicted of receiving specialized weapons training from an al Qaeda linked group in Somalia.
Like clockwork, Mehannas family defends him as a nice boy who just completed his graduate work to become a pharmacist. What his family may or may not know is that Mehanna goes by the online handle Abu Sayaba and runs the Iskandari website which is devoted to promoting the Salafi ideology.
For instance, Tarek Abu Sayaba Mehanna has, literally, dozens of posts recounting the words of Abdullah Azzam, the intellectual backbone of al Qaeda. Also among his favorite authors are Sayyid Qutb.
In addition to friends like Maldanado who has been convicted on terrorism related charges, Mehannas online buddies include:
Shades of Swords, who glorifies the executed Bali bombers as martyrs.
Inshallahshaheed, who we have an entire category devoted to and who claims he personally doesnt go off to fight the jihad because its hard and who recently has set up his own media division in support of terrorist organizations.
Jihad Fields Are Calling, whos name pretty much sums it up.
And so on and so forth. In other words, the people he associated himself with online are either a) actively engaged in violent jihad; or b) actively engaged in supporting violent jihad through the distribution of terrorist propaganda.
You can bet that the FBI arrest on relatively minor charges was taken because there was a reasonable fear that Mehanna was leaving the country to join or further support the jihad himself. His friend Maldanado had also left the country to pursue religious studies in Egypt, but ended up in an al Qaeda linked training camp in Somalia.
If any one finds a picture of him, please pass it along. Thanks to Miss Kelly.

ANOTHER CYBERSPACE/MEATSPACE CONVERGENCE
SNIPPET: Rusty Shackelford, PhD., credits Samir Khan with the first report of the arrest of Abu Sayaba, proprietor of the iskandrani blog, by the FBI in Boston. This corresponds to the arrest of Tarek Mehanna, age 26, on charges of lying to FBI agents when questioned two years ago about his friend and now-convicted terrorist Daniel Joseph Maldonado. Mehanna was about to leave the USA for Saudi Arabia, which evidently prompted the unsealing of his indictment.

Witness says suspect wanted to fight Americans in Iraq, hope to participate in jihad
By Associated Press, Published: November 17
SNIPPET: BOSTON An American in prison for training at a terrorist camp in Somalia testified Thursday that a fellow American accused of plotting to help al-Qaida told him that he would fight U.S. soldiers in Iraq, if given the chance.
Daniel Maldonado took the witness stand Thursday in the trial of Tarek Mehanna, a Sudbury, Mass., man charged with plotting to provide material support to al-Qaida and unsuccessfully attempting to get training at a terrorist camp in Yemen. Mehanna then allegedly began helping al-Qaida by translating and distributing online texts and videos promoting violent jihad.

Valencia (SNIPPET: "Daniel Maldonado converted to Islam in 1999 and soon found guidance and insight in Tarek Mehanna, the high-profile witness testified yesterday in Mehanna's terrorism trial in US District Court in Boston.") Stay strong, Boston
I know that one of the nations great cities will rally in the wake of marathon attacks
by S.E. Cupps
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
TUESDAY, APRIL 16, 2013, 10:41 AM
SNIPPET: According to a 2011 infographic from Boston.com, the website of the Boston Globe, Bostons high-profile events, including the marathon, made it one of the top 10 potential terror targets in the country, even though there had been no attacks in Massachusetts over the last decade.
And though there had been no attacks, there had recently been some significant ties to terrorist plots hatched in the area.
In 2007, Daniel Maldonado, who had ties to Methuen and Lowell, was charged with supporting terrorists in Somalia.
In 2008, Sudbury resident Tarek Mehanna was arrested for allegedly plotting to kill U.S. troops in Iraq, conspiring to support Al Qaeda and traveling to Yemen in an attempt to get terrorist training.
And in 2011, Rezwan Ferdaus, an Ashland man with a physics degree from Northeastern University, was charged with an Al Qaeda-inspired plot to send a remote-controlled aircraft carrying explosives into the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol.
His arrest prompted Rep. William Keating, the states only member of the House Homeland Security Committee, to remind his constituents of the dangers of homegrown extremists, even in Bostons tony suburbs.
