Michael Steele, former lieutenant governor of Maryland, has decided to run for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee and is in talks with Newt Gingrich to win the former House speaker's endorsement, FOX News learned Tuesday.
Steele declined to comment, but a source close to the situation said Steele would announce his candidacy as early as Thursday.
The source also contradicted a report in Tuesday's Washington Times that Steele and Gingrich were competing for the RNC post.
"There is no fight," the source said. "This tension between Michael Steele and Newt Gingrich is totally fabricated and, in fact, Gingrich and Steele are working together to create a new strategy for the direction of the GOP."

If this strategy is to appeal to Democrats and independents (or moderates) then it's a losing strategy. We don't need NO stinking tri-partisanship. We need unified Conservativeship.
Michael Steele is a good conservative, but he can't win in his won state, what makes anyone think he can win nationally...
As for Newt, he is only a conservative when it's convenient
Newt nor Fred need to be in charge of anything at this time. Nothing. Zip. Nada. Squat.
They just need to press conservative values at every moment. Radio, TV and articles. And Newt needs to forget global warming BS for the time being.
Michael Steele needs to be named Chairman of the RNC. He set the tone and get the lackluster GOP in order. Hopefully injecting a backbone in the majority that are still in Congress.
As a fellow resident, I share your concern.
Go Mike GO GO GO!!!!!!
We need to get Rush Limbaugh back doing TV and really pound home some truths to the American public. He ought to reach out to the young people - have a “College Night Reality Show for Politics” - “Man on the Street” type thing to help our young people. Maybe a “broadcast in excellence” with a twist on letting young people come on his show and give them opportunities to learn how to be a broadcaster. Look how many love American Idol and like being in front of a Camera! Sort of “American Politico” - (jeopardy with a twist? Rush as a political Alex TRebeck and college students on to answer political trivia?) Just brainstorming here...WE NEED IT!
>>>>>Gingrich has too much baggage and talks a good game, but then tries to play up to Democrats. <<<<<<
This is for the RNC for God’s sake, not for public office.
If you think that Newt should be excommunicated from the GOP and from conservative leadership you are out of your mind.
Toss Judy Baar Topinka while you’re at it.
Well, he won a state chairmanship and did the job very well; then he won the lieutenant governorship in a state with a 2 to 1 Democrat registration and did that job so well he was endorsed by the WaPo even though he and Governor Ehrlich were then replaced by a Democrat who came under attach from his own Democrat dominated legislature he was so bad by comparison.
I can agree with that.
Fred and Newt ... you chance is over. Please don’t ask to be in charge any more.
Young blood needed.
Hey, Smith288.
I like that video.
You have to look deeper at what Newt means. He is talking about packaging. He says the way to win is by identifying issues on which supermajorities of voters agree with you, and running on those issues.
That doesn’t mean you throw away your principles; it means you concentrate on the obvious stuff.
Newt would be ideal to lead the RNC.
We have got to get back to the operational requirements and benefits of day-to-day conservatism, and away from big government social and moral diktat.
Fred turned down the option of running for the post. I wouldn’t mind him, at least fundamentally he remains an unapologetic conservative who can articulate the reasons why. And he does have some experience in building a stronger party. He needs to remain involved. I’ve no objection to Steele, he should have been the choice in ‘06 but Bush though pandering with a selection of Mel Martinez was the way to go.
My objection to Newt isn’t age related. It’s due to that liberal tripe coming out of his mouth the last four years. The message disqualifies him in my eyes.
Yeah.
Why is Newt out? Why should we be excited about Steele?
