Thompson emerges as potential leader as GOP moves rightward [Fred for RNC chair?]

Republicans desperate to rebuild their party are looking for a new leader, and former Sen. Fred Thompson may seek the job.

Thompson, a Tennessee conservative and former actor, is mulling a run for chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Though he ran a lackluster campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, he remains popular in his party because of his ability to articulate conservative values in a plainspoken way.

“Fred isn’t looking to run for national office again,” a close Thompson adviser said, adding that no official decision had been made. “He is looking to rebuild the party and help elevate the [conservative] movement and its principles.”

While the Republican National Committee considers who will take the helm when the term of the current chairman, Mike Duncan of Kentucky, ends in January, conservatives in Congress are already working to re-brand their party.

Two questions:

Did Fred support the “bailout”?

Does Fred still believe in global warming?

If the answer to either is yes, he needs to stay in the movies.

I was all for Fred, and gave his lame campaign $400, but now I am very, very, very tired of him.

The "no fire in his belly" stuff was true.

Balderdash! If anyone heads the now defunct republican (stupid) party, it should be Sarah. Holy crow, what’s wrong with you people? (not a racist question. Gotta be careful now).

No, Fred, No.

Fred Thompson's fan dance did more to kill momentum for a real conservative than anyone else in the primaries.

I “bundled” $40,000 for Fred, and I’d do it again tommorrow.

Please no Fred! Go back to acting in movies and TV. Duncan Hunter, Sr. or Rick Santorum or even George Allen would better suited.

Ugh. Not inspiring to me in the least. A totally feckless campaign. NEXT!

I like Fred, but, if he is going to be so milque toast as he was and come to the party late, then stay in Hollyweird. The Conservatives need someone who is serious, 100% of the time.

I’d rather it be Newt.

According to NRO both Thompson and Romney were asked if they would take the job (they’re on the NR Caribbean cruise) and both said no.

There’s an item either here or on Town Hall that Newt said he would take it if asked.

I’m sorry that so many of you are still willingly lapping up the MSM “belly” story. I expect that you and others have so invested yourselves in this that you won’t be persuaded.

Actually, this would be a good fit for Thompson and a good fit for a Republican Party in desperate need of a true Conservative leader.

If ‘ol Fred becomes the head of the RNC, the Repubs. will be in the “Dark Ages” for the next decade. We don’t need a kindly, folksy, sleepy Uncle Fred running the GOP...we need a SHARK...with TEETH!!! Unfortunalely, we don’t see one on the horizon right now.
