At this point, anything that requires a magazine is probably too expensive. For handguns, I recommend a revolver and plenty of speedloaders. .38 is the minimum caliber, you want the most powerful cartridge you can fire accurately. I’m partial to Smith and Wesson, but some people still have grudges.
Shotguns: police like Remington 870s, the Marines prefer Mossberg 500 series. Both are good, but I’ve got a Mossberg.
And the SKS is the way to go for rifles. Cheap, reliable, and no magazines to get lost or damaged.
That’s what I’ve got, and what I recommend. Whatever you’ve got, PRACTICE.
I respectfully disagree. 7.62x39 ammo has been drying up since Bush #41 stopped cheap imports along with some very high end firearms as an intro to his version of the NWO. That situation is only going to worsen. Eventually (read soon) the only thing available in that caliber will be berdan primed and corrosive.
Best to stick to US/NATO ammunition which is 5.56mm (.223) and 7.62x51mm (.308). Also 9mm and probably 45ACP will always be pretty much available, albeit costly unless you buy now in bulk.
