PHOENIX, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain lost his bid for the White House mainly because anti-incumbent fury doomed him from the start, analysts say.
McCain made many missteps, but they didn't matter much because it was clear no Republican stood much of a chance in the 2008 election with voters overwhelmingly blaming President George Bush and the GOP for the nation's problems, The Arizona Republic reported Sunday.
McCain, who represents Arizona in the Senate, lost to Democratic opponent Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois last week in an electoral college landslide. He never stood a realistic chance, said Alberto Gutier, a longtime Phoenix Republican activist and McCain supporter.
"Everything was going to go the wrong way for the Republicans, in general, because of the negatives that President Bush had," he said. "When you combine the war, the economy, the gas prices -- it's a hell of a thing."
"Our polls and national polls showed that most people by a 2-to-1 margin blamed Bush and the Republicans more than the Democrats for getting us into the mess, and they believed that Obama was more likely to get us out of it," Bruce Merrill, a veteran Arizona pollster, told the Republic.

This is the best analysis of the 2008 Presidential Election that I have read so far.
N.S.S.
The GOP lost because Mitt Romney adopted the tactics
from Mountain Meadow Massacre upon Gov.Palin and her chldren.
America will suffer deeply because of Romney’s treason.
This election was orchestrated - and it was the electorate that was played.
Well, everyone else on FR is saying if we had done this, and if we had done that, the Republicans could have won.
As long as the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 8600 on Election Day, the Republicans were going to lose the election.
It was precisely W’s New Tone which was responsible for the Republicans’ diminished standing. A true wimp in the face of political venom. Had he effectively lead his party in slapping down the Democrat slander of our fighting men and women in the military, the American people would have followed as well. Instead, he ceded the field of political battle to the traitors.
And now we see the results.
A co-worker told me a year ago that the GOP could nominate the risen Christ and still lose. I agreed.
Without Sarah, it would have been much worse.
No when you have a socialist and a socialist lite running, and your base will not vote for you, the middle will break 2 to 1 against you. A couple of the people in the primary would have made a better showing, if not actually winning.

A tough but nimble Republican campaign would have IMMEDIATELY lain the blame on Obama's door step. What McCain did, however, was to join the Democrats in blaming capitalism itself.
Opportunistic moron.
McLAME LOST because he started a campaign of “CIVILITY” and “HONESTY” which NEVER works against SOCIALISTS!!
Then Instead of pouncing on the DEMS when needed, he smacks down Willie Cunningham for calling Barak ... HUSSEIN.. an WORKABLE CAMPAIGN Tactic, but McLAME was ABOVE all that.
He DESERVED TO LOSE! .. and without SARAHCUDA, Mclame would have lost by a MONDALE sized Landslide!
Agreed.
Wow. That was one of the MOST informed posts I have ever seen around here. No matter that Bush had been abused in the press for years, that the stock market crashed, housing failed (with no proper coverage from the media), jobs were disappearing and Obama had a massive advantage in $$$$.
Nope, blame it on the Morman. That explains what REALLY happened.
I wonder how the election would have turned out if McCain simply adopted the will of the people and voted against the bailout.
He would have had a point and could have drove it right into Obama’s heart.
The media was not going to report on the housing mess truth.
