A Tale of Four Countries (Stalin biography brings an alarming sense of deja vu)
CMI ^ | November 7, 2008

As a South African reading Simon Sebag Montefiore’s biography Young Stalin,1 I was struck with an alarming sense of déjà vu. The prevailing personal and broad social dynamics at play in the years leading up to the Russian Revolution seem to so parallel those of our country.

Underlying every area of social intercourse—among and between the revolutionaries themselves, the various revolutionary ideologies, business interests and even the executive of the state—was conspiracy and mistrust, in a bitter struggle for supremacy...

I've had the same feeling when reading Sebag Montefiore & thinking about the rise of Ayers, Dohrn, Klonsky, Obama, et al [Sunstein, Axelrod, Soros, etc].

Also Chang & Halliday on Mao gives me the same sort of shivers:

Perhaps more aptly, this election was a struggle between Bolsheviks and Mensheviks (Palen excepted).

I just picked up the book “Young Stalin” from the library yesterday, it’s captivating and as good as Robert Conquests “Stalin: Breaker of Nations”

When an acquaintance ironically suggested to Lenin that an early Marxist instrument of government be named ‘the Commissariat of Social Annihilation’, Lenin responded, ‘Well said! That’s exactly how it’s going to be.
*sigh* ....very telling..

Serf's up! There is long way between a liberal being voted into office and the Russian Revolution. This guy must have absolutely no faith in America. Look at the crap sandwich Reagan took over and remember his optimism.

The coming revolution in america will be unique in our country. The revolution will fight to restore our constitution, not create a new one.

I’m not sure I have any faith in the American people. If the best of us, who make so much money are willing ignorant of socialism’s dangers, and the least educated just want free stuff, there is no way to reach them. I’m not sure they even deserve a Republic.

This is truly the important question. An electorate that expects government to solve all their problems will turn us into the failed socialist nations of Europe.

Personally, I don't think the independent voters all feel that way. They may have voted that way this time, but when it hits them in the pocketbook it might wake them up.

And we keep letting them steal our government, setting up one party rule. It’s frustrating that none of our leaders are willing to fight for anything, a real fight.

"It’s frustrating that none of our leaders are willing to fight for anything, a real fight."

I'm afraid we're approaching the point where only a real fight, ala 1776 or 1861 will fix this. Once a significant portion of the population becomes so brainwashed that they become completely intransigent, only wrenching the country away from them will restore the republic.

No amount of talking or voting would have ended slavery and stopped the southern states from seceding, for example. You can call me crazy, but I'm just stating the facts. We're not there yet, but we're getting awfully close.

The flip side, of course, is that if this unthinkable scenario actually comes to pass, it is difficult to imagine how we could ever put things back together. I think our only option for possibly avoiding a violent or totalitarian future is if we can somehow regain control of the education system. Liberals have taken the long view and have been very patient in slowly but surely turning our schools into leftist incubators. If we can at least reduce, if not eliminate, the social engineering occurring in the schools, we may have a chance in a generation or two. I just hope we have the time.

Yeah, I made the mistake of reading that book this June... and the Wild Swans one too. Too many frightening parallels.
