Commentary: After Palin hard-sell fails, McCain aides attack her
CNN ^ | 11-06-2008 | Campbell Brown

Whatever you may have thought about John McCain's running mate -- about whether she was qualified, prepared or experienced enough for the job -- try to put all of that aside for just a moment, because Sarah Palin is who she is.

She did not become measurably more intelligent or measurably less intelligent during this campaign. Remember, she was only part of the campaign for a matter of nine weeks.

Sarah Palin is who she is, which is why I find it so stunning that the very people who introduced us to her, who told us she would make a great vice president, have now turned on her with a vengeance.

I kind of wonder if it played right into peoples misconceptions about her.

I think so. As I've written at length to another poster, she came off as human and amiable from day one, it was her policy expertise that needed to be pushed. She should have been appearing on the talking head shows on Sunday morning, not among the bubbleheads on SNL.

I think she was perfectly capable of dealing with those AM boobs. But even so, I have to wonder why they didn't send her there.

He should have immediately gone on tv and told the American public who was at fault for the crisis instead of agreeing with Obama as to the cause.

I agree with you there. Everytime he and Palin talked about greedy Wall Street, I died a little inside. The RNC should have blanketed the nation with ads explaining how Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, and Clinton, too, helped bring this to us, while Bush and McCain tried to stop it.

....Reagan would never have stooped to that level. He was able to inject humor where it belonged, in a serious political context.

I recall a couple of his ‘greatest’ stunts...

He was waiting on either the State of the Union address or a Press conference and these guys showed up with a couple of wheelbarrows(?) full of papers...he turned to the camera, looking America “dead in the eye” and (basically) stated—I am supposed to report on this budget material which Congress delivered to my office this Morning....

When he said into a ‘supposed’ dead mike...’we begin bombing in 5 minutes’

BUT he got his message out to the people....
I think Fred Thompson could have pulled something like that off if he REALLY wanted the job......

While I never cared for the "we begin bombing" moment (I didn't think it was bad, just kinda...there), what was so great about Reagan's use of humor was, as I noted, he put it in a political context.

I think of it this way: Jack Nicholson doesn't do Tv interviews because he wants you to watch his movies to get your fix of him.

Similarly, Reagan didn't have to go on talk shows to show you he was human--he did it 24/7, IN HIS JOB as President. I actually wanted to see him on TV, doing his job, because I knew that was the whole person, at least his public side. He could be warm, human, funny, silly--all while maintaining the appropriate respect for the office and his duties.

That's one of the many reasons I dislike Obama: he's such a freakin stiff.
