Ditka, Elway, and Schwarzenegger -- please. Jocks indifferent to policy are not the solution.
We will never win again without recovering thought leadership. Our great victories of 1980 and 1994 were not forged on a football field or gym, but in the conference rooms of Heritage, Hoover and Cato. Our great defeats of 2006 and this Tuesday were the product of a fatal lack of seriousness and intellectual engagement which typified Bush Administration and DeLay / Frist Congressional leadership.
This doesn't mean we need to be led by academics and think-tankers. Reagan was no scholar but he had a visible and profound engagement with conservative philosophy, and a tremendous ability to translate it to commonplace terms. He was the "Great Communicator" because of what he communicated, not how.

You’ve obviously never heard them talk policy. Elway and Ditka are quite astute and involved. Arnold is very much as well, though very moderate in theology.
Ditka and Elway would win, and they would be reliable Conservatives. Let’s look at a grand group of existing Conservatives for leadership, and folks like Elway and Ditka for winning important seats.
