The Treatment of Bush Has Been a Disgrace ~ What must our enemies be thinking? (former Kerry lawyer)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 11-5-08 | Jeffrey Scott Shapiro

Posted on 11/05/2008 12:02:40 AM PST by STARWISE

Earlier this year, 12,000 people in San Francisco signed a petition in support of a proposition on a local ballot to rename an Oceanside sewage plant after George W. Bush.

The proposition is only one example of the classless disrespect many Americans have shown the president.

According to recent Gallup polls, the president's average approval rating is below 30% -- down from his 90% approval in the wake of 9/11. Mr. Bush has endured relentless attacks from the left while facing abandonment from the right.

This is the price Mr. Bush is paying for trying to work with both Democrats and Republicans. During his 2004 victory speech, the president reached out to voters who supported his opponent, John Kerry, and said, "Today, I want to speak to every person who voted for my opponent. To make this nation stronger and better, I will need your support, and I will work to earn it. I will do all I can do to deserve your trust."

Those bipartisan efforts have been met with crushing resistance from both political parties.

Mr. Shapiro is an investigative reporter and lawyer who previously interned with John F. Kerry's legal team during the presidential election in 2004.

The treatment President Bush has received from this country is nothing less than a disgrace.

It has been a disgrace on FR. He has gotten a pass on countless unconservative positions on FR, with enablers rationalizing every move. It's a disgrace, all right, but not the way you mean. And the results show it.

“Yep. The President played nice with the Democrats and got rolled”

Yes that is exactly what happened. From the first day W assumed the presidency he was mercilessly attacked by the left.

Of course now we must all abandon our principles and beliefs and put all partisanship aside because the mesiah wants to reach across party lines.

The Europeans truly are laughing at us now harder than ever. They know they will be able to push Obama around at will.

Aren't you the one that has been on FR B*#@hing about W over and over for years? NOW you are acting like a big man for your opposition? Great, thanks for all you have done for America. Really, thanks. I am sure the history books will be full of your heroic deeds.....bashing a good man who has gone thru hell to defend this nation.

I am sick of reading bile and negativety from losers like you who sit at home and feel like big men when they get home from their Mickey D's job.

Do you have a clue what Obama is going to to do to this nation? To your small and petty mind, getting back at GW is worth whatever hell is in store for this nation.

I have been here a long time and have always recoiled from attacking other posters, but you sir, have pushed me to change that stance. Screw you. There I said it. How DARE you, have you no shame?

Funny this fellow mentions Harriet Miers. I’m sorry, but that woman had no place on the SC. Then his other picks were excellent.

So, this was the problem with Bush, he was inconsistent in the worst way.

And I agree with all the posters who are saying he did not defend himself. And that was the problem with Bush I also.

My hubby was saying last night that we should have listened to Jesse Jackson when he said “Stay out the Bushes!”

I’m not really wanting to bash Bush, but he really has left our party in a shambles.

I think the one thing that is clear is that “bipartisanship” is just another snare of the left and must be rejected at every turn.

And as for the media, well I don’t know what to do about that, because truly they are the enemy.

Starwise, I am not going to finish reading all of these comments, because the usual Bush-bashing from the right is here.

To all of you people who thought President Bush was so terrible, look who you have now. Enjoy the Marxist you helped elect.

It amazes me how people re-make history to their own liking. Does anyone remember that President Bush was far more conservative than most of his opponent, and certainly the most conservative person who could have been elected!
What about leading this nation after 9/11, successfully prosecuting two wars, lowering your taxes, appointing Roberts and Alito, and standing up for the Culture of Life? NOT ONE OF THESE THINGS WILL HAPPEN IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS.

If Republicans and especially conservatives would see things as Ronald Reagan did (take what you can get and press on) we wouldn’t keep having these circular firing squads. When Bill CLinton was in horrible trouble most of the democrats rallied behind him. He managed to stay in office and is loved by a good portion of the country.

But President Bush has been treated so poorly by those who are on his side that I despair of his ever being credited for all the good he did. And he did a LOT.

What is wrong with people who can never see the good?

You just got your ass handed to you

And how did Dunc. do? McCain scraped him off of the bottom of his shoe. You couldn't even sell him to Republicans, much less the country.

How many true believers can you elect in any capacity? Six or eight in the Senate. A score or so in the House.

If you can't support the Republican nominee, stay out of the party.

McCain was the product of a primary process that has been set up to elect precisely the type of person the RNC wants.

Republicans are smart but da-um. The New Hampshire primary was set up a hundred years ago and has been hiding under your bed all this time just to getcha. The primary process and order is essentially the same as it has been since Reagan.

We don't get the good guys because the guys like McCain can suck all the oxygen out of the room.

It couldn't be because you support looooosers? McCain was broke in the primaries with little more than his reputation and a plane ticket. Your guys were just suckin' hind tit.

Yes, if asking our nominees to adopt the core beliefs of Sarah Palin is stark raving lunacy, then you've certainly nailed me. Six months ago Sarah Palin was a competent small state governor. McCain picked her because of her record of reform and fiscal restraint. Six months from now she will be back as a competent small state governor with tales of a Great Adventure to tell her grandchildren.

The lunacy I am referring to is your incoherent attacks on McCain earlier in the season. They were simply not based on any reality.

How did that work out?

It didn't. McCain was the anti-Bush but he was still a Republican in an anti-Republican year. Just how many seats did the goober Republicans pick up? You are a footnote in history.

unpatriotic and evil.

No, I didn't say that. I said that I will do everything in my power to keep you from influencing the direction of the party. That right goes to all those who helped and turned out, even though the candidate may not have been exactly what they wanted. That is what a political party is.

And the one that is my favorite, can't find anyone more conservative than Dole, Bush, and McCain

Eisenhower

Nixon

Bush II

How many hard right candidates do you see on there?

Well, your order of battle sure paid off this time sunshine.

Your name wasn't on there this time. We won't count on you the next. You can be replaced by a Mexican.

Really, thanks. I am sure the history books will be full of your heroic deeds.....bashing a good man who has gone thru hell to defend this nation.  While Bush has done some good things, he has also done some bad things.  I have critcized him for things and I would do it again.  I have also praised him for some of the things he has done.

I am sick of reading bile and negativety from losers like you who sit at home and feel like big men when they get home from their Mickey D's job.

Do you have a clue what Obama is going to to do to this nation? To your small and petty mind, getting back at GW is worth whatever hell is in store for this nation.  George Bush is past tense.  I have no interest in getting a pound of flesh at this point, but I do have an interest in addressing things as I see them.  And it is my opinion that Bush, the Republican Congress, the RNC, and John McCain are responsible for where we find ourselves right now.  If it makes you feel better to blame it all on me, that's okay with me.  We both know that isn't true.

I have been here a long time and have always recoiled from attacking other posters, but you sir, have pushed me to change that stance. Screw you. There I said it. How DARE you, have you no shame?  Please state one policy of mine that caused us to arrive at this point.  If all the people here on Free Republic couldn't cause John McCain to win yesterday, please explain how one person, me, could have caused what we both are sorry happened.  I could not possibly back John McCain.  I would rather have seen him win, but there wasn't a chance in hell I'd soil myself with a vote for the guy.  I will NEVER vote for the likes of John McCain.  If you think I should be ashamed, so be it.  I am not.  John McCain is trailing in my state by 3.4 millin plus votes.

What I would advise you to do, is try to figure out what really cost us the election.  I didn't.  Blaming me is easy.  It doesn't contribute to correcting what really cost the Republican party the election, and I do think that is important.

They too hope not to see the likes of this good man ever again.

I was never negative toward him. When he did something right, I said so. When he was wrong, likewise. When he p!ssed me off, I said he p!ssed me off, not that he was a buffoon, an idiot, or a bumpkin. When he behaved like a buffoon, an idiot or a bumpkin, I said it was just George being George.

What I CAN’T forgive him for is not cleaning house.

This is a plea from the left to NOT treat Obammy in a like manner. They are saying, “We are sorry. We made a mistake. Please don’t do to Obammy what we did to George!”

Pah!

Agree with your post #22. Four things we must now focus on: 1) The destruction of the media. We can’t let them think they can pick, or destroy at their whim, any of our people; 2) Institutions of “higher learning” who teach marxism over freedom; 3) the democrat party as a criminal enterprise; and 4) We need to refocus the RNC on conservative, pro-American (non-RINO) candidates.

Time and again there were opportunities and certainly reasons for calling a press conference and just reaming people out for their lies and distortions. I believe you have to teach people how to respect you. GW allowed the MSM to define him and their definition was all wrong.

Absolutely agree. Two words: BULLY PULPIT. Learn to use them!

You just got your ass handed to you

And how did Dunc. do? McCain scraped him off of the bottom of his shoe. You couldn't even sell him to Republicans, much less the country.  So here you are claiming to be a true Conservative, and you seem to think you prove that by denegration Duncan Hunter.  You glibly describe the likes of John McCain scraping him off his shoes.  Yep, I sure wish I could live up to your standards.  /s

How many true believers can you elect in any capacity? Six or eight in the Senate. A score or so in the House.  I can tell you how it works in my state.  The Republican party does not support our candidates with funding.  Our candidates mount their own campaigns on a shoe-stirng while the Democrats pour millions into the effort.  Is that how you successfully support poeple you truly want to make it to the Senate or House?

If you can't support the Republican nominee, stay out of the party.  Let me see, you want the Soros loving McCain to remain, but you want the guy who calls him on that to leave.

Okay, you think there is nothing wrong with our primary and caucus process.  Nice to know.

We don't get the good guys because the guys like McCain can suck all the oxygen out of the room.

It couldn't be because you support looooosers? McCain was broke in the primaries with little more than his reputation and a plane ticket. Your guys were just suckin' hind tit.  Look, you can look for every person to blame but youself, and the candidate you supported, or you can acknowledge reality.  A person was selected that did not appeal to the voters.  That is reality.

Nice story, but it does not address the point.

The lunacy I am referring to is your incoherent attacks on McCain earlier in the season. They were simply not based on any reality.  I listed McCain's record.  And now you state that record was not based on reality.  LOL

How did that work out?

It didn't. McCain was the anti-Bush but he was still a Republican in an anti-Republican year. Just how many seats did the goober Republicans pick up? You are a footnote in history.  Bud, I am not your problem.  Your problem is that you cannot address what really cost you the election.  You can sit there and play it off that I cost you the election, or you can address reality and fix it before next time.

...unpatriotic and evil.

No, I didn't say that. I said that I will do everything in my power to keep you from influencing the direction of the party. That right goes to all those who helped and turned out, even though the candidate may not have been exactly what they wanted. That is what a political party is.  So anotherwords you plan on doing exactly the same thing next time.  Is that about it?  You plan on playing the game the same way.  You plan on picking the most liberal candidate.  You plan on spending months trying to convince your own team it was a good idea. You'll spend more months trying to convince others that even though you don't think he's a good candidate, they should vote for him.  And when he loses, you'll trash everyone who told you all along that Democrats would not vote for a Republican(D) before they would vote for a Democrat(D).  Great plan.  At least you're willing to take ownership.  /s

And the one that is my favorite, can't find anyone more conservative than Dole, Bush, and McCain

Eisenhower
Eisenhower
Nixon
Nixon
Ford
Reagan
Reagan
Bush
Bush II
Bush II

How many hard right candidates do you see on there?  I hadn't realized that Eisenhower ran twice, Nixon ran twice, Ford ran once, Reagan ran twice, Bush ran once, and Bush II all ran twice from 1996 on.  Very powerful comeback.  /s

Well, your order of battle sure paid off this time sunshine.

Your name wasn't on there this time. We won't count on you the next. You can be replaced by a Mexican.  Well your favorite son certainly thinks so.  Why shouldn't you?
