WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's grandmother died of cancer, he said in a statement on Monday, a little more than a week after Obama interrupted the White House race to say goodbye to her in Hawaii.
"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer," Obama said in a joint statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility."
Dunham helped raise Obama from the age of 10 while his mother was working in Indonesia, and Obama took an emotional 22-hour trip to Hawaii to visit her on October 23 and 24.

Prayers for his family.
I am still not voting for him. My mother died of cancer in 1978. She was only 41. At least Mrs. Dunham seemed to have lived a very full life.
I’m with ya!!! I hope that the man loses tomorrow...PRAY, really, but should he win it would be tragic that she died the day before her grandson became the first Black president of the US. Really sad.
The Messiah said she would die before the election. He would no longer be Messiah if she didn’t. Simple confirmation to his followers that he is indeed “The One”.
They don’t know his Grandmother- they imagine their own Gramdmother. Aren’t there any statistics on this?
LET’S HOPE OUR REPUBLIC SURVIVES TUESDAY
[Absent is exactly WHEN she died. Today? Yesterday? Two days ago? A week?]
Yep, I noticed that too.
RIP.
So sad that her great-granddaughters where robbed of the privilege of seeing her before she passed. And I’m sure she would have loved seeing her beautiful great-granddaughters. How strange that Senator’s Obama’s family didn’t accompany him for that one last 1-hour visit.
Lots of dysfunction in this family.
The grandparents were noted (by Barry’s half-sister) as being non-observant Christians (of Methodist and Baptist backgrounds). She also said her mom was more agnostic than atheist, although Barry has said that she held a “healthy skepticism” of organized religion (one that he also claims to possess) and she reportedly brought text from all of the world’s religions into the home.
I guess an atheist can pray for his grandmother. She’ll need redemption, and if it also gives an atheist just a glimmer of possibility that there may be something greater than himself, I find that to be a positive change.
RIP, grandma.
It does however, make one wonder if she died a couple weeks ago. Pull this out on election eve.
Cancer patients usually pass away from a planned terminal sedation.
This may be the first politically timed terminal sedation ever, though.
first thought to cross my mind....
Or fly to Hawaii for the funeral at least...
Prayers up for the family.
Did she make it to her birthday? Anyone know?
However liberal she may, or may not have been, she was private, and she performed her parental role twice...once for her own, and then for her grandchild when her own daughter was either incapable or unwilling to do so. She clearly loved her grandson and gave him all the opportunity she could.
She cannot be blamed or slighted for this. May she rest in peace and may God in Heaven rest her soul.
Now, what Obama has done with that upbringing and opportunity himself, in wandering in the druh culture, in becoming an abject marxist, and in rubbing shoulders with and hobkbobbing radical and terroristic relationships to a political career is another matter entirely.
A weak McCain will cease campaigning as a gesture of respect and his own idiotcy.
Hmmmmmm...it’s possible.
I wonder what will happen with the birth certificate now.
Will they slip it into Granny’s casket, to be buried forever?
I used to be skeptical about the “deaths come in threes” saying. As I’ve reached middle age I’ve watched it happen again and again here in the town where I live. I first heard of it when my Mom and two others in my community died during the same week. Superstition? Maybe, but I’m just saying it happens...
Prayers for her .... HE is a freaking GHOUL.
And how fortuitious that you were able to take the grandkids out there for one last little special moment with Grandma, Barry. Those kids will probably remember that heart-felt meeting for the rest of their lives.
