WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's grandmother died of cancer, he said in a statement on Monday, a little more than a week after Obama interrupted the White House race to say goodbye to her in Hawaii.
"It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer," Obama said in a joint statement with his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng. "She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility."
Dunham helped raise Obama from the age of 10 while his mother was working in Indonesia, and Obama took an emotional 22-hour trip to Hawaii to visit her on October 23 and 24.

41 is way too young to die. My father was 72 when he died of lung cancer in 1978. My mother was 69 when she died of lung cancer in 1990, and my only brother died of a massive heart attack at the age of 51 in 1995. I never knew any of my grandparents as they all died before I was born in 1947. I know I missed out on a lot by not knowing them.

Actually Madelyn Dunham gave one tightly controlled 30 minute interview to journalist David Mendell in 2004 and hasn’t spoken to the media since then. Maya Soetoro Ng’s husband, Konrad, taped her little bit for that commercial.

You're absolutely right it's not true. Ridiculous. We've lost many in my family to Cancer, and we didn't euthanize any of them. We tried to provide what comfort we could and shame on anyone who suggests anything other than that is 'normal'.
It's a shame... FreeRepublic had a real opportunity to show class. In fact, they may have proved only that FR's moderators have more class than DU's in that at least the worst posts here will be deleted, eventually.
Bless the grandmother's heart. And I hope for peace for her family who will grieve her, and those whose grieving of her will be interrupted, disrupted, and turned into a bit of a circus because of the extraordinary timing of her death, and some of them, will no doubt witness some fairly nasty speculation about it on the internet. For that I'm a little embarrassed. I hope they see mine too.

Truly disturbing behavior.

According to this story they were not in the same place. He was in Florida, she was at Grandma's side, as a good granddaughter would be, especially since Maya is also her only granddaughter, and Maya's mother, grandma's only child, passed away years ago.
She was attended by a physician? At 4 o’clock in the morning?
That’s impressive. There are not many physicians who make house calls in the middle of the night.
It’s so sad that none of her relatives were able to be with her when she passed.
Be sure and tell NBC I’m already boycotting them and their sponsors while you’re at it. The media sucks, mmmmmmmmkay? and they know it.

Please pray for Florida tonight. I think it’s gonna be like 2000 but heightened. With 4,000 imported lawyers and ACORN, and hundreds of non-Floridians here to agitate, it’s gonna be hell here imo.

Well .. there's your problem. You dare bring up the concept of "LOGIC" in regards to this election! I would submit that at least 50% of the electorate .. the swooning 0bamaoists .. has NO concept of the theory of logic (bumper sticker slogans like "HOPE" and "CHANGE")!
I saw it posted best yesterday like this: "A large segment of the electorate has watched so much TV and played so many video games, that the visual center of the brain are the size of a cantaloupe and the logic and reasoning portion is the size of a small pea."
