at the close ranges inside a house a shotgun has the same diameter pretty much as the end of the barrel....in other words...it might as well be a rifle or a pistol as far as hitting or missing.
A shotgun a close range does tend to be pretty final though if hit anywhere near vitals. shotguns have the benefit of not shooting through too many walls and are safer in a crowded house or crowded neighborhood.

This is the type of “Gun Control” that I favor. so I go to the shooting range with my wife and children as often as I can.

She should sue his estate for the mental anguish and medical bills. This slug’s estate is worthless, but even in matters of law, the best defense is a good offense. It might deter any of his family from pursuing legal action.
