My view of Sarah Palin has changed in the two months since John McCain named her as his running mate.
I thought Palin was a lightweight; she's not. I thought she was an ingenue; she is, but only as long as her claws are sheathed. I thought she was bewildered and star-struck...; if she ever was, she isn't anymore. I thought she was nothing but raw political talent and unrealistic ambition; it turns out that she has impressive political skills. I thought she was destined to become nothing more than a historical footnote; I now think that Democrats underestimate her at their peril........
It's tempting to think of Palin as a kind of pop star, the latest flash in the pan who rockets to the top of the charts...[b]ut that smug assessment ignores the evidence that she has the chops to be much more than a one-hit wonder......
The McCain campaign gave her a job to do -- slash, burn, fire up the base... and she went out and did it.
McCain's campaign rallies often have a sense of purpose and duty about them; Palin's have a sense of electricity.
Some of McCain's people {put her down] and all of which reinforces my belief that Palin is a much more formidable politician than I first thought.
Ignorance isn't the same thing as stupidity. When Palin talks about economic policy these days, her sentences don't meander...She has more to say about foreign policy...She has learned much in a very short period.
And she will learn more. I predict we'll have Sarah Palin to kick around for a long, long time.

Go ask CBS/NYT. They seem to have an obsession with Palin. Sick obsession...They are scared of her, just like Reagan.

PHOTO FROM YESTERDAY'S RALLY--Gov. Palin looks like a determined WINNER to me.
Shes got “it”. Just like JFK and Reagan had “it”.
How about the bear pin! :)
From the profile looks like a polar bear, yes?
What a breath of fresh air.
“Wow... same day New York Times says Sarah hurts GOP. Washington Post says she’s electrified the GOP ticket. They must not have coordinated their assault. LOL!”
The NYTimes have been trying to downplay the positive effects Governor Palin has had in this election ever since McCain announced her as his running mate. She has energized his ticket in a way that has them running scared. I love it.
Palin / Wurzelbacher 2012!
correction to your headline: the “WashPo” did not “admit” anything in this column
This is an OPINION piece by one guy, Eugene Robinson
It in no way represents any official stance of the paper, it’s one guy
This is a pet peeve of mine, I can’t count how many times various FReepers say “wow, the NY Times said THAT?” or “look the WaPo just agreed with us, finally”
Opinion columns are just that, opinion pieces, generally by one person or sometimes two...... they are not masthead editorials making some official statement for the paper.
/rant off
Yes she does, just as Obie does not. All of his charisma is contrived and strained. Only in rare moments does he actually seem like a likable enough fellow.
Even then, that's about all he comes across as. Nothing on the order of Ronaldus Magnus or Sarah Palin.
Those two people are great spirits, and it emanates from deep within their soul to the tips of their hair.
I think the only reason they are writing stuff like this now is because their initial plan to diminish her obviously didn’t work, and they realize that to continue to do that just make them look like idiots, even to Democrats.
“Those two people are great spirits...”
Amen!
Now you're right. The more appropriate caption would have been--"Liberal Columnist writing in the Washington Post Acknowledges That Which We All Have Known About Governor Sarah Palin." You're right.
I regret having misled you as to the content of the article by the caption. It's 1:30EST- must be getting a little punchy.
no worries, it’s just that “WashPo admits” that I was objecting to..... and as I said a lot of people say it, but I like to remind people that even the most liberal/left columnist doesn’t necessarily speak for the paper, at least not every time...... :^)
“Even if McCain doesn’t win this election, Republicans owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for giving Palin this shot - without Palin’s rise the GOP could be facing 4 years out of power with the likes of tired hacks like Huckabee and Romney as the only possibilities for 2012.”
No matter the outcome next week, McCain has elevated himself and his place in history by choosing Governor Palin.
JFK may have had “it”, but he cheated Nixon out of the presidency. Read up on that some time. He was a media creation, much like Obama.
She;s very different from Reagan in this way: Reagan married into liberal Republicanism and only his self-assurance and I think his own family experience allowed him to move to the right on social issues, despite what Nancy might think about abortion for instance. Palin made an existential choice in bearing a down’s syndrome baby, so it is not so much as matter of ideology as deep rooted conviction, conviction she shares with her whole family. Just as Reagan’s experience with the communists in his union made him a viseral anti-communist who could not be swayed by sophistry, so she is on this issue. Ditto her experience on the oil commission. She is not a thinker, she is a doer, but she seems to do things based on her gut reaction to events.
Ignorance is curable, stupidity is fatal.
That is the difference.
And we know how the media concealed his fillandering. Senator Ralph Yarborough’s office was next to Kennedy’s. One could tand in the hall and see a parade of beutiful women going into his office. Where are they going, say one. Someone says, nothing but gives the look that says, you don’t know. Oh, one says.
