Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has gained a foothold in another voter demographic: astronauts.
Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, endorsed the Democratic candidate on Wednesday in an op-ed published in the Orlando Sentinel.
Comparing Obamas inspirational capabilities to those of JFK, she writes, He has inspired young people to engage with their communities and has excited them about the possibilities of what they can accomplish. That is in the best spirit of discovery.
Space travel is not just the subject of childhood fantasies though. Its primed to be a major policy issue for the next administration.
NASA, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, is widely considered to be at a crossroads as it refocuses on returning to the moon and sending the first astronauts to Mars.
President Bush highlighted the new objectives in 2004, less than a year after the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated while reentering the Earths atmosphere. To reach these goals, NASA will retire its aging shuttle fleet only 10 more flights are planned and create a new generation of rockets, the Ares I and V.

She looks 70 but she’s only 57. What did she do to herself? Space aging?
And I care about what Sally Ride thinks because why??? BTW who is she again???????
I think McCain’s promise to freeze non-essential agency budgets might just be the cause here.
NASA essential?—I doubt it.
With Obama we’ll just magically get money for NASA by cutting 25% from the defense budget.
She’s just a Space Cadet.
My wife, my girlfriend, and my mistress, all endorse McCain/Palin, so not to worry.
Quota queen endorses quota king.
Nope. Obambi is no friend of NASA either. If it is not “social spending”, then he isn’t interested.
Just "take off"...
Barry says he will support NASA. Maybe so but there are several democRATs who hate NASA with a passion. Does Sally or anyone else with half a brain really think Barry will stand up to Conyers and demand that his NASA-eviscerating legislation not pass?
I still think that she was the first woman to do the dirty deed in space!
John Glenn dispelled that myth.
I think Fox covered it for about a day, then then that was the end of it.
Of being stupid
She’s an idiot. Anyone who endorses a Communist has spent too much time in weightlessness.
Sorry Sally.... BHO is no JFK.
SFB! I don’t want ‘my’ President doing any ‘discovery’ while in the oval office...
I’m getting tired of these nobody hasbeens thinking they are smarter than WE THE PEOPLE...although these days, ‘the people’ are turning into dumb as rocks voters...
