CNN’s Campbell Brown Rips ‘Double Standard’ on Palin Clothing
Newsbusters ^ | 10-23-08 | Balen

CNN anchor Campbell Brown led her Election Center program on Wednesday with a critique of the “double standard” concerning the recent attention on the $150,000 that the Republican National Committee spent on vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin: “My issue: there is an incredible double standard here, and we're ignoring a very simple reality. Women are judged based on their appearance far, far more than men. This is a statement of fact. There has been plenty of talk and plenty written about Sarah Palin’s jackets, her hair, her looks....Compare that to the attention given to Barack Obama’s $1,500 suits or John McCain’s $520 Ferragamo shoes. There is no comparison.”

Brown spent more than 2 minutes on the matter, in which she related her own experience of how women “get scrutinized based on appearance” much more than men do: “...I speak from experience here. When I wear a bad outfit on the air, I get viewer e-mail complaining about it, a lot of e-mail, seriously. When Wolf Blitzer wears a not-so-great tie, how much e-mail do you think he gets? My point is, for women, unfortunately, appearance is part of the job. If Wolf or Anderson shows up on the air without makeup, do you think you would even notice? I show up on the air without makeup, trust me, you’ll notice.” The CNN anchor then defended the RNC’s efforts to help Palin appear visually good: “All women in the public eye deal with this issue, and it’s for this reason that I think the RNC should help Palin pay for hair, clothes, and makeup. It is part of the job.” She concluded her commentary by labeling the attention on Palin’s clothing a “peripheral issue” in the presidential campaign.

Not to mention Hillary’s $6,000 pantsuits provided as gifts, with no clear justification in campaign finance law.....

Don’t recall the Mediascum getting riled up about Hillary’s pantsuits.....

Cambell Brown is rarely right about anything, but at least she spoke up about this!

Campbell Brown is a moron — and generally can be counted on to think her own opinion about the minutae of her life is FASCINATING and IMPORTANT for the rest of the world...

Normally her idiocy is of the pro-Obama variety but I guess she's deeply passionate about shoes and accessories...

Hey, don’t forget the lobster and caviar he and Michelle had for dinner the other night. Oh, and champagne too. But I’m sure they paid for that with their own Amex.

Agreed. I shop at Walmart. LOL

As you well know, in politics perception is reality. Right now the McCain-Palin ticket should stay away from controversy like this. Its dumb.

Campbell may well be a moron. But here, the bigger morons are in the GOP who don’t know how to turn this issue to their advantage. They lose an entire newscycle playing defense-when they could have scored big points on offense.

I read another thread last night that the designer of Hillary’s pantsuits said they were “donated” and worth $6300 each... in my estimation that amounts to an illegal campaign contribution.... crickets on that front.

Probably because they didn’t pay for them.... an article laughing at the GOP for paying for Palin’s clothing because “everyone knows you can have it donated to you” pretty much said it all.

I agree. But I think Sarah Palin would look good wearing a burlap sack. LOL She has class and style and it comes naturally.

I disagree.... this is all about nothing and we should not be bullied about it, actually it is time to stop allowing the GOP to be bullied. The RNC bought these clothes, the democrats have their clothing donated and don’t even realize they are getting illegal campaign contributions as a result... the clothing is beautiful and she wears it well and makes us proud.. besides Walmart clothing comes from China or other third-world countried and a good portion of clothing from the better stores is made here in the USA!!!!

Why don’t you ask Mrs. Reagan Man’s opinion of this issue. Campbell Brown is stating her opinion of this issue. This is no different than what journalists are always doing.

She thinks this is a loser issue and shouldn’t be harped on, because it is. Women see this completely different than men. Every poster on this thread who says this is a real issue is likely a man.

I was over at my democrat friends house last night and the radio DJ just went on and on about this and what hypocrites the Republicans are and the $400 haircut story. The man rat was in full agreement with the DJ. The woman rat obviously didn’t see it the same way. This in spite of the fact that she is the brains, the boss and the acting “man” in the marraige. Furthermore, she is an accountant, does not wear make-up nor ever buy expensive clothes. She is a frugal person. They have no kids, but plenty of pets.

Now she did have a story to tell about being in Nieman Marcus once. And I followed with a story about Louie Vatton purses. And they both knew who he was and how expensive his crap is. Someone she knows has one of those purses, a girl my wife works has 25 of them. I told the man rat he knows way to much about this and the moment he starts talking about shoes, that’ll be the last time he ever sees me again. He replies with a “that’s all I got to do to get rid of you?”

Bottomline is that I suspect most women find this line of attack to be inappropriate. There is most certainly a difference in how men and women are judged and for a woman, appearance dominates. Campbell Brown sees it the exact same way and has stated such. She gave real examples in her profession how it’s completely different for her than for the male talking heads.

“Who are you wearing”?

Boy do I hate that question. It always comes up whenever there is a celebrity posing for pictures outside an awards show.

However, Sarah looks very good in whatever she wears. I don’t need to know “who she’s wearing”.
