Well, I agree with you that the US won't end (though I certainly think it will be damaged). But I don't think Bush will end up looking good. The disastrous years of 2006-2012 will be blamed on Bush's policies, not the Democrat control of our government.
I believe a case can be made that Hoover's policies were not great, but neither were they disastrous. The Great Depression really got going only after FDR took over (1933 and 1934 were the worst years I believe). But Hoover gets all the blame for the trouble. FDR presided over the mess for over a decade, and he (traditionally) gets the credfit for "fixing it" -- which really happened under Eisenhower.
I was making light of the popular view here of the socialist nature of Obama, but I do think the radical left wing of the Dems will try to roll him for just about anything, The Fairness Doctrine, and a permanent Assault Weapons Ban come to mind as two goals of a Dem controlled Congress.
