David Brooks is taking some heat from doctrine-enforcement agents of the left and right for stating, in an interview with me at that famed redoubt of populism Le Cirque that Sarah Palin represents a "fatal cancer" for the Republican Party...

You’re in the thread title, man.

The douchebag wing of the GOP is so dense as to confuse a western anti-statist (who just happens to attend a pentecostal church) with the “fire and brimstone” crowd.

“Why would you ever read anything that isn’t vetted by the ostrich brigade on FR.”

Hey, you got sarcasm on my nice, clean shirt. Oh, no, wait, it’s an old, dirty one. That’s fine then.

I don’t much read newspapers anymore. The idea of printing news on paper and then handing out the paper seems so inefficient. A truly competitive marketplace should kill those things. It’s not that I’m young. I’m probably older than all of you put together. (Feel free to object to my arithmetic on that.) But I’m trying to keep up with you young whippersnappers and yer newfangled technology. Got me one of these computing machines and everything.

quote: “... But Brooks tends towards more of a, well, royalist, or perhaps a class based kind of conservatism, in which the commons may benefit, but most definitely are not seen and not heard, save for the trips by presidential candidates to the rustic parts of our country for a trip down nostalgia lane.

This is why Sarah Palin offends him so. He is absolutely opposed to the notion of the citizen-politician. Politics is too important to be left to the masses. Their betters are the ones who should be entrusted with governmental power. Nevermind that Lincoln was essentially a self-educated hick from the boondocks. Truman was another commoner who through a series of unfortunate occurrences ended up in the Oval Office. Men like Roosevelt (either), Kennedy, and Bush41 are the type of men Brooks believes should be the executive in our federal government. Patrician, wealthy, Ivy League educated, and ‘wise.’ Men like, well, him...”

Ha ha . Indeed ! Thanks for the post. Spot on.
In fact this is one of the reasons Palin offends the “progressives” as well. She is one of us “peeps” and not of the inside “skull-and-bones-ivy-league-masonic-boys-club-pre approved-etc”.

Libertarians (small-’l’) have had virtually no say in the Republican party over the past eight years. Where on earth do you get the idea they have hijacked the party?

So . . . we can amuse ourselves by making fun of him. Okay, now I get it. Thanks.

“David Brooks spoke frankly about the presidential and vice presidential candidates Monday afternoon, calling Sarah Palin a “fatal cancer to the Republican party” but describing John McCain and Barack Obama as “the two best candidates we’ve had in a long time.”

Well, since my summation of this campaign has been, since the two nominees were known, that these are the two worst nominees at least since WWII, then I guess consider Brooks’ statement to be complete nonsense at best.

And here we have a very revealing admission, or confession, by Brooks about a conversation with Obama:

“And I was dazzled, I felt the tingle up my knee as Chris Matthews would say.”

That Brooks is dazzled by a lightweight like Obama explains it all. This pretend Republican is just as hoodwinked as all those followers at the cotton candy, “hope and change”, “change and hope” rallies. Brooks elitist trashing of Palin is just his cowardly way of endorsing Obama without having to muster the honestly to actually say it while he poses as some sort of conservative at the NYT.

I’ve been following her career since she took on the corrupt establishment in Alaska three years ago. If McCain didn’t pick someone with her abilities, and credientials (basically her or Bobby Jindal or maybe Rick Santorum) there was NO WAY I was going to waste my vote on him.

She is a shining star. I was going to vote for McCain, but after he picked Sarah I am sending money and working.
I am enthused.

The blue-blood Bush’s ruined Reagans party.

Reagan was a self-made man.

Brooks is an eastern parasite that nibbles away at anything moral and decent. imo
He’ll jump sides someday like David Brock.

Doing that sure doesn’t help your credibility.

The only cancer in this race is Obama/Biden and their radical left wing politics.
