Obama concedes mistake over Muslim outreach meeting

The Obama campaign’s Muslim outreach director participated in a meeting in mid September that was attended by several controversial Muslim activists, NBC News has learned. The Obama campaign now concedes that was a misjudgment, and that its top Muslim staffer would not have attended the meeting if she had known the full participant list beforehand.

“Would a campaign staffer have attended if they were aware of the complete list of attendees? No,” said Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt in an email statement to NBC.

The Muslim outreach meeting On September 15, newly named Muslim outreach director Minha Husaini spoke to a small group of Muslim leaders and potential Obama supporters at a hotel in Springfield, Virginia, several meeting participants and the campaign said. Two other Obama-affiliated Democratic Party workers joined Husaini and also spoke to the crowd. Some Virginia and Washington, D.C.-based Muslim activists and interested citizens attended, and flyers were passed out from “Arab Americans for Obama” stating Sen. Obama’s goals for achieving peace in the Middle East, protecting the civil liberties of Arab Americans and ending the war in Iraq.

Several participants told NBC News that Husaini and other speakers delivered a standard Obama campaign pitch. “They said, ‘We’re here to get the concerns of Muslim voters and let everyone know that the Obama campaign does want the support of the Muslim community,’ ” recalled one participant, who requested anonymity. The meeting was not advertised and some attendees got text phone messages notifying them that day of the meeting’s location, the participant said.

Nearly a month later, the meeting is drawing controversy--and not because of anything said at the meeting itself.

The Obama campaign now concedes that was a misjudgment

How many more 'misjudgments' does he get to make before it becomes a serious problem?!

Minha Husaini, an Muslim American in her 30s now working in the Obama campaign:

“He gives me hope,” Ms. Husaini said in an interview last month, shortly before she joined the campaign on a fellowship. But she sighed when the conversation turned to his denials of being Muslim, “as if it’s something bad,” she said.

“How many times has the Obama campaign met with groups tied to or connected with terrorist organizations?” asks the RNC today.

“Would a campaign staffer have stayed once they were aware of the complete list of attendees? Why the hell not? Whose going to call us on it? The Republicans? Hahahaha!” said Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt in an email statement to NBC.

Oh yeah...the other Muslim outreach director resigned after 2 weeks because of an affiliation with an Islamic fundraising group with a dubious reputation.

Maybe I’m over-reacting, but showing NO-BAMA with that particular book in his hand, well, that just blew me away. Sure, we can all read whatever we want, have well-rounded and nurtured perspectives and all, but given his shady associations, I’m just speechless...Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot!

I’m sending that that pic to everyone!

Do you suppose they would wait until they get an email from the McCain campaign, if the tables were turned -- so they can make sure they can report their excuse or so sensitive apology?

I don't really think it's a totally "anti" American book - but it sure isn't totally "pro", either. I think the author believes we should get used to being the lesser power in the world and like it. The guy writes for Newsweek. It sure doesn't look very good, tho. It's barack's "W-moment" photo-op for his followers. Remember this?
