A ballot measure to ban gay marriage has already won the support of many religious leaders and Republican politicians.
On Tuesday, it received another endorsement -- this time from a group of Democrats.
In a press conference headlined by Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle, the community leaders -- including pastors and civic activists -- said marriage should be defined as the union between a man and a woman.
Amendment 2, if passed by voters on Election Day, would do just that by changing the Florida Constitution to say, ``No other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized.''
Gay marriage is already illegal in Florida, but the proposal -- if approved by 60 percent of voters -- would make it difficult for a judge to overturn.
''It is not a conservative or liberal issue,'' said Brenda Lewis-Williams, chairwoman of a Bay County grassroots organization pushing the amendment's passage. ``It is not a Democrat or Republican issue. It's a moral issue.''
But opponents see it differently. They argue the measure could revoke the domestic partnership rights of millions of Floridians, gay and straight. Another concern is that widowed seniors who choose to be in a domestic partnership, rather than remarry, could also lose their benefits.
The measure has already garnered support from several Republican politicians, including Gov. Charlie Crist, U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez and Attorney General Bill McCollum.

Naugle’s also the guy who hammered the g@ys for having s3x in public restrooms a while back.
There’s hope for my state. Crist isn’t too bad either if he keeps his yap shut about climate change. Yeah Charlie, the weather does change!
I think we can 80% on this on Nov. 4th.
ah the homo’s are using dirty tactics here in Florida
When we were getting signatures to have it on the ballot the homo’s and about 60 activists from MA came here and went ot court saying that anyone who signed it should have their name and address on the internet for all to see.
guess what we got a record amount of signatures in a short time, more than enough needed.
Now it is on the ballot they are using scare tactics and trying to confuse the voter.
signs have gone up at major intersections saying vote no on 2 protect Florida families(note no word containing homosexuals , queer or gay.
there is a sign next to it they pout up as well saying Jesus doesn’t discriminate vote no on 2
so what they are trying to do is get probably the elderly or anyone who doesn’t follow this closely confused and the way they worded it is to make then folks think think they should be voting no instead of voting yes to keep one man and one woman
course these idiot perverted sickos don’t realise that we are still telling friends, family, neighbors, work associates, customers etc about question 2
so if the homo’s want their sham marriage let them go to MA as CA will have normal marriage again
well done to CA for fighting back on this perverted sickness
