Yes. I do know TB is very high in the SFO area. In Reno, we seem to get bad rounds of MRSA and creepy stomach viruses at least once a year probably from all the out-of-towners. Good times! ;)

take a super duper high powered Probiotics with strains of S. boulardii. (And no....yoghurt is not good enough....LOL!)

Boy, that sounds encouraging! I'll have to remember that. A couple of months ago I booked a cruise for our 25th anniversary to the Mexican Riviera. Now I'm wondering if this wasn't such a good idea!?!?!? I don't think I can get my deposit back. We are scheduled to depart in June 2009.

Does FReeper out there have any suggestions on the safest way to navigate the port-of-call type stops in light of the current discussion.

Your suggestions would be most appreciated!

I was stationed in Mexico City for almost two years (91-93), working at the Embassy. We lived in a gated community about ten miles from downtown. The 'hood was regularly visited by the local cops. Rather than engender a feeling of security, one felt that the cops were "casing the joint."

My late wife loved it there. She and her friend took off almost every weekend, exploring the smaller villages around the capital, buying dust-collecting junk. I was at the very best apathetic about being there, and was happy to accept an assignment to Havana. Together, we saw a lot of the country: Ixtapa/Zihuatenejo, Oaxaca, Merida, Cancun, Cozumel, inter alia. The temples of the sun and the moon (Teotihuacan) outside the capital were very impressive; we often wondered what went through Cortez' mind when he first saw those pyramids. We never had any problems with anyone anywhere in Mexico.

Dunno if you'd consider it "inexpensive", but I was pretty impressed with the aquarium when I was there three years ago. Dunno how it compares to the ones in Baltimore or ATL, though.

I think that full-price tickets were $30 each or so, but full price is for chumps. We got ours online for quite a bit cheaper.

Otherwise, hit the all-you-can-eat seafood places for dinner. There's a number of good ones.

This Mauian lived in Mexico for a year and a half in the late 80’s. Had a couple of guns stuck in my face by federal cops and was threatened with jail by immigration officials more than once - I had a work visa but that didn’t matter. It was all about the “mordita” - the bribe. The place is a cesspool and 10x worse today.
Maui No Ka Oi!!

I've been in California for over 30 years.

I never have, and likely never will go south of the border. This stuff has been going on for years.

Like I say, I’ve been here for 40 years and my two daughters went through all the grades here. That kill Haole day thing is a bunch of crap. Yes it was going around but more like a joke. No Haole ever got killed here although a few with smart mouths and and attitude got roughed up a bit. 99% of the time those few had it coming (whether haole’s or any other race). Don’t believe all that you hear or read.

This post of yours seems to me to be undergirded by anti-white racism. How can "kill Haole" be a "joke"?

Like “kill Liberals”. Sounds good but no one is going to do it. “Undergirded”= fruit of the loom? Besides, you are a racist if you are not voting for Hussein Obama. (I heard this from the Democrats.

You were lucky. I read of a college student who was kidnapped, boiled, and used in a voodoo rite by a drug gang. Gross.

I have no problem believing that. OK, I won’t be going back to Mexico anytime soon. That is really scary. Sounds like what went on in Saddam’s torture rooms.
