RELEASE No. 20081010-14

ISF kills 3 armed terrorists, captures 12 individuals during separate operations in northern Iraq
Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BALAD, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces killed three armed terrorists, captured 12 terrorists and a criminal, and uncovered a weapons cache during separate operations in northern Iraq Oct. 7-9.

In an operation Oct. 9 in Khalis, Iraqi Special Operations Forces captured a suspected mid-level criminal cell leader who is believed to facilitate attacks on Coalition forces in Diyala and Baghdad. The individual, a former Iraqi Police member, is said to have conducted intimidation attacks and engaged in kidnapping for ransom, theft and robbery to supply money, weapons and vehicles to other criminal elements in Khalis.
On Oct. 8 in the Balad area, elements from the 4th Iraqi Army Division captured two alleged Jaish al-Islam terrorists who were members of an improvised explosive device cell that targeted Coalition forces. They are also believed to be associated with a member of al-Qaeda in Iraq. During the operation, a third armed individual, who was identified as an active member of Hamas in Iraq, was killed after he postured for an attack on the Iraqi soldiers. The association of the three insurgent groups indicates the possible convergence of terrorist organizations.

During a separate operation Oct. 8 in Khan Bani Said, Baqubah Special Weapons and Tactics captured six suspected AQI terrorists. The individuals are allegedly responsible for conducting routine attacks against Coalition and Iraqi forces. During the operation, Iraqi Security Forces killed two of the suspects who showed hostile intent as they pointed weapons toward the SWAT members.

In an operation Oct. 7 in Makariyim, Muqdadiyah SWAT captured three suspected AQI terrorists believed to be involved in logistical facilitation. They are said to be associates of cell leaders involved in murder, kidnapping, theft, torture and indirect fire attacks against Iraqi and Coalition forces. They had approximately $8,000 U.S. dollars in their possession.

In a separate operation Oct. 7 in Sufayah Village, approximately 11 km from the Syrian border, the 3rd Iraqi Army Division uncovered a weapons cache consisting of IED making materials to include: five blocks of TNT, two shape charges, 20 ft. detonation cord and seven blasting caps.

“These operations continue to demonstrate the growing capability of the Iraqi Security Forces and their ability to effectively capture or kill criminals and terrorists who are intent on undermining the security of Iraq, said Col. Bill Buckner, spokesman for the Multi-National Corps – Iraq.
