Just in observation of timelines:
1980 — The Democratic National Convention becomes the first major political party in the United States to endorse a homosexual rights platform plank
The 70s and 80s saw the rise of the Gay Rights Movement and gay rights groups. “Gay Power” meetings were held in Greenwich Village to organize based off the model of the African American Civil Rights Movement. The 70s and 80s were the organization of the homosexuals in America to fight for the equality.
I believe Hillary Rodham was around NYC at this time too. She did do her thesis on merging gay rights with politics. I believe she did some work with the Black Panthers too who are also affiliated with Stonewall, the birth place of the activism.
