ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is accusing Democrat Barack Obama of "palling around with terrorists" for his association with a former 1960s radical.

Palin was referring to Bill Ayers, one of the founders of the group the Weather Underground. The group took credit for bombings, including nonfatal explosions at the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol four decades ago.

McCain and Palin are going after precisely the people you are talking about - Democrats (as well as moderates and independents), and to be specific, Democrats and independents who are undecided at this point.

People who actually care about terrorism are already not going to vote for Obama (this is the third time I've said this now). The people that McCain needs to win are undecided moderate/right-leaning Democrats and independents, and those people really don't care about terrorism (else they would have already decided on McCain and then they wouldn't be undecided).

Sure, Palin can go around trying to attract these people with talk of Ayers, but their numbers are insignificant at this point, compared to the numbers of people who are worried about th economy and taxes.

Bush successfully pulled in many of those voters in 2000, but he ended up losing quite a few in 2004 (they were replaced by other voters Rove managed to pull in) and then we had 2006 with the defeats in Congress where we pretty much lost the whole bunch of them.

If Palin wants to take up residence in Washington, she'd better be playing the numbers game and going after the larger numbers of people who are much more concerned about the economy and about taxes.

Furthermore, if Palin keeps bringing up Ayers, it's free press time for Obama (and it allows the more liberal parts of the MSM to start talking about veiled racism on the part of the GOP, just like they did with Hillary when she did it). After all, as soon as she says something, the media immediately goes to Obama's people and lets them speak.

On top of that, when Palin talks about it, it opens her up to the media asking about the Alaskan Independence Party crap.

At this point, with a month to go, and with all of the turmoil in the markets, if Palin and McCain fail to make the economy and taxes the #1 priority with undecideds, they will lose.

2006 will seem like nothing compared to the defeat we have in 2008 should that happen, since much of this will cascade down-ticket.

If you really believe that independents and moderates know this guy is taking his cues from a guy who used to bomb buildings and is stil proud of it but they don’t care, you are really ill-informed.

If you think they care more about what some professor was doing in the '60s and '70s (long before many of them were born), rather than what's happening with the markets and economy today (we are already down below 10,000 this morning and flirting with a 5% drop and the market has only been open a few hours), then you are really ill-informed.

Should they know what Ayers did and that he was once linked with Obama? Sure, I believe so, but what is more important - educating the undecideds about something they obviously don't care about (Ayers), or trying to win the election?

The economy is what matters at this point - McCain and Palin need to pay attention to peoples' wallets, because that's what the undecideds and many others care about. Something that happened 30 or 40 years ago, they don't care about (hell they probably couldn't tell you when Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the Moon).
