NEW YORK, NY October 02, 2008 After nearly two years away, the USS Intrepid is coming home today and taking its old spot off Manhattan's West Side.
The historic aircraft carrier, fresh from a 22 month, $120 million restoration, will be towed up New York Harbor and slotted into its familiar Hudson River berth.
The floating military and space museum will reopen to the public on November 8 with a large celebration on Veterans Day, November 11. The museum will offer new exhibits and facilities for public events along with visitor access to crew quarters and other spaces previously off-limits.
How many Intrepids would $700b buy?
That’s the first time I’ve seen an SR-71 on an aircraft carrier, LOL!
Aren’t Nimitz class around $1B a piece? I’m sure Newport News would give us a bulk deal if we ordered 700 of them at once. But then it takes them about 2 years to build so...
Click on pic for past Navair pings.
Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.
What sub is that in front of the Concorde?
Two years compared to who-knows-when is nothing. Besides, the investment return is much better.
That’s the single seater A-12 Blackbird, the immediate predecessor to the SR-71.
It was initially developed as an interceptor, but the Air Force didn’t want it at the time.
I got to walk under the wing, which is surprisingly low by the way.
And, I ran my hand on the aircraft skin.
You could push a screwdriver through it, it is that thin.
But being titanium, it’s quite strong.
And then they cordoned off the aircraft afterwards.
Went there for my 17th birthday, got to walk through the Regulus missile sub there, the U.S.S. Growler.
SSG-577 USS Growler
Late 50s era Regulus missile sub.
I believe its the “Growler”
More like $4 or $5 billion.
awwwww... a little baby carrier....how cute... :)
WWII vintage short hull Essex class.
And she survived being smacked by a kamikaze.
Damn time flies. Seems like just yesterday they were talking about grounding her getting her away from the pier. Has it been almost 2 years already?

Remember how the Nimitz was stuck in the mud and it took days to pull her free.
