Senators loaded the economic rescue bill with tax breaks and other sweeteners before passing it by a wide margin, 74-25,

What does that make the total price tag? Maybe a trillion dollars, give or take. (With such bills the true price can't really be calculated ahead of time, sort of like an entitlement bill, as opposed to something like the Defense budget, which is for a fixed amount.)

And there were plenty of obscure tax breaks to go around, like one for certain wooden arrows used by children, and another benefiting litigants in the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Man, this get better and better

I am hearing it is the 95 democrats who have some die hard holdouts. We should congratulate them for being patriotoc

They just want more goodies, and they got some of them. Only 12 votes need to change (margin was 23 votes, if a net of 12 change to voting for it, it passes by a single vote. I think it will get quite a bit more than that.

Please, someone explain to me how the Senate can within the Constitution originate a spending authorization?

The Constitution does not require spending bills originate in the house, only bills for raising revenue. See Article I, section 7, first paragraph.

But beyond that, this "bill" was really an amendment to a bill already by the House, so if it was a revenue bill, then it would still be legitimate because the Constitution, in that same section, expressly allows the Senate to amend such bills. Of course it then has to got back to the house, or just to a conferance committee.

That latter may be why they just amended a House passed bill, technically they could slip this turd in by having it go to conference, with the House conferees, Dominated by Dims, recommending passage by the full House.

McCain may have just thrown the election and the recession will come anyway.

Now there is no way to salvage what's left of freedom. The next stage of the plan is coming, just like the hippie sell-outs planned it. All the ones who got rich from this scheme will be long gone from here while the rest of US can look forward to the totalitarian "normalization" from marxist hell.

I'm sure that most of the liberals think that FR will see the first "eliminations" by the new government but from what I've read..it will be the useful idiots who will be lined up and shot because they think that somehow they deserve power, when none will be given.

Hey, so, if I got a lot of loans, couldn't pay them off, lied to get more loans, couldn't pay those, and all I got to do is ask Congress to bail me out? Only in America! /sarc

Surely you know by now that is not how this all came about. It was corruption at FannieMae and FreddieMac backed up by the Dems in congress who took the money an turned their backs.

Surely you know by now that Obama made a living extorting money from banks by suing them to force more subprime loans on them. Just today, here on FR there's an article that CITI just gave 1 million dollars to LA RAZA. Why? To grease the wheels for the bailout bill.

That's how bad it is in DC these days and if Barack Obama gets his hands on the US treasury you can just kiss this country good-bye.

Mental health parity my dying ass.

The Mental Health assistance was obviously included to help the Democrats.

I finally *got* that just now. I must’ve been tired last night.

It deserves a hearty LOL!

Yep, our so called conservative senators (Hutchison and Cornyn) voted for this debacle.

These are truly sad times.

At the very least, if you decide not to vote or to vote 3rd Party, please write the Republican Party (President) Obama, and a couple of newspapers to tell them they don’t have a mandate.

You should really go on record that you’re punting (no vote) or voting for socialists in order to kill socialism. If you can get any of the press to give you any notice, much less press. This is the media that ignored Biden’s “Roosevelt on TV in 1929,” after all.

It is now October 2. Where there is a choice between viable candidates on the ballot, that choice is between a Democrat and a Republican.

If we do not re-elect our Republicans and win a majority in the House and the Senate, the debacle of ‘06 will be repeated in a larger way: the Dems and the media will tell us that the Dems have a “mandate” against the war and in favor of more taxes and regulations.

If you choose to support a Dem, either by not voting or voting for a non-viable 3rd party, your vote will become part of that “mandate.”

I posted this on another thread, but it pretty much applies here, as well:

“If you can’t tell, I am incredibly pi$$ed about the bailout and am probably spouting some things I will regret later.

There are a lot of cooler heads on FR that are trying to present current events in a positive light and I am reading and thinking about the points they are making.

I don’t anticipate changing my mind about the bailout, nor do I anticipate changing my mind about electing incumbents.

As for the rest of my comments of late - they could be up for grabs.”

Thanks for explaining and keeping this discussion on a more civil level than I was ready to last night.

Dusty
