I am withholding judgment on this until someone much smarter than me on economic issues (and I don’t mean an online gathering of anonymous FReepers) explains it.

I'm holding my fire until I hear from Thomas Sowell.

They were against the bill that Paulson submitted. They got the worst features killed and got better ones inserted (got rid of mark-to-market, helped reduce cap gains, got rid of ACORN, killed the restriction on oil shale drilling and a bunch of pork). If this is a 100% Dem bill, all that goes right back in.

Their only alternative was to refuse to negotiate or leave and let the Dems vote on it, which also means a terrible bill. Pelosi would have made a barn full of political hay saying that the Rs are AWOL when they are needed the most.

They have to have a “bailout.” I’d have preferred asking for Dodd’s and Frank’s resignations and a complete investigation of ACORN too, but the only way to get that is to get an R majority again.

JMHO

Vote for a Dem so we can have more of this. This is what happens when you don’t have a majority.

Take a deep breath and think about it. You want a Dem? Next thing you’re going to say is that you rather have 0bama because McCain isn’t wearing your favorite color. That’s simply ridiculous.

Yeah, get pissed, but go to the voting booth and get Republicans elected. Otherwise you get a dem controlled congress and an idiot dem president. Is that what you want? Is that what this country deserves? Hell no. Stop with this victim crap and get out there and get Republicans elected. Get conservatives elected.

I still respect Boehner and he said we will not lose on this money and if we do we will have to right to go after those who did profit.

It's still a socialist way to do things but let's face it we are screwed.IT is late in this game.

Several years ago we tried to end this madness(several times) and when it didn't pass in Congress, like so many other things, we stopped screaming and yelling about it. That gave the rats yet another pass! We are in a way to blame! We should never have let up on those SOB's until they relented and the lending nonsense was stopped years ago before things got so out of hand.

And with that, I bid you all good night. The football game calls me, and I must answer.

And that about sums up the plight of America.

Some of the folks here are going off the deep end. Is this bill conservative? No. But are we willing to sacrifice the election for this one issue? If the markets tanked, Obama is a shoe in and the GOP might be dead for a generation.

Sometimes you have to do your best with what you have. We are in the minority. We can’t block anything. The Dems would have passed a bill with ACORN and all that other crap in it anyhow. We did the best that we could with a crappy bill.

I’m withholding judgement too, the best that can be said is that this is NOT the original bill that sent everyone into a frenzy.

Let’s all take a deep breath and see the final bill, then if it sucks, THEN go crazy.

The ONE positive I can tell you is that Kudlow was happy with the final bill.

Let’s not elect Obama just yet, OK?

Translation: If you paid your bills on time, were smart and locked in a fixed rate, even paying a fee (called a "point") to get a better rate-this bill does nothing for you. If you did not make all your payments, did a no-cost loan with a variable rate-this bill will lower your rates and the amount you owe on your mortgage.

So let me see if I've got this right: I've got a fixed rate mortgage, have been making payments on time for 5 years, but lose my job and start having problems paying on time while looking for a job, I'm SOL with this. Do I have that right?

Taxpayers paid back? I don't buy that. Two reasons:

First, is there a provision in the bill that requires the Fed to sell these securities? I could readily see the Fed holding onto these things and, in effect, seizing a lot of private land to “protect” people.

Second, does anybody really think the taxpayers will be paid back for this? The money might be paid back to the Treasury, but until I see a dividend check in my hand, there's no way I'm going to feel “paid back”. Besides, even if they do attempt to disburse dividend checks, if they base the amounts on the taxpayers’ tax rate, checks are naturally going to be larger for the people who pay the most taxes, the rich. That isn't going to go over well. Alternatively, if they pay dividend checks out equally, then there's a massive redistribution of income toward the poor. Alternatively, they don't pay dividend checks, and ALL the money goes to lower-income Americans.

These guys need to stop with the b.s., stop with the politico-speak, and start being honest about this. Have some balls, people.
