ABC News: Deal May Be Dead: Democrats Blaming McCain
ABC News ^ | September 25, 2008 | Jake Tapper, Charles Herman and Z. Byron Wolf

After days of intense bipartisan negotiations and meetings today at the White House, the deal to bail out staggered investment banks may be dying amid partisan finger-pointing.

Republicans blame Democrats. Democrats blame Republicans, and a key Democrat even pointed a finger at Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain.

House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank, D-Mass., told Democratic colleagues that McCain's sudden heightened involvement in the negotiations has destroyed chance of an agreement, sources told ABC's George Stephanopoulos.

Frank compared McCain's involvement to "Richard Nixon blowing up the Vietnam peace talks in 1968."

Sure seems to me that even if the Dems get that spin out, the voters are going to love Mac for it.

Obama is just like a leach, afraid that a photo op will happen without him. This guy is just waiting to be the first to hold a press conference and take credit for it.

The Democrats (specifically Barney Frank and Chris Dodd) said this morning that there was a deal. In fact, there was no deal, and they had to know that there was no deal. In other words, they lied. And the reason for the lie seems obvious: to attempt to embarrass John McCain, who wanted to do something to fix this problem. And had they told the truth, they would have made McCain into a hero for sounding the alarm on Wednesday that a deal wasn’t getting done and therefore that he needed to suspend his campaign and return to Washington DC.

But now these knuckleheads have put themselves in the unenviable position of having to work with McCain and other Republicans to solve the problem or to refuse to do anything further, thus risking yet another Wall Street meltdown. Will they put their country first or their political interest first? Stay tuned.

With over 60% of Americans against a bailout, I think the Democrats should keep on telling anyone and everyone with a camera that it’s the Republicans that are trying to kill this socialist bailout.

Barney Frank is partly to blame for the housing mess. Barney should do the right thing: Resign, and turn himself over to the law to be imprisoned

bambi’s being lost in the shuffle either way.

TOO scared to do anything but mark ‘present’ and get back to his blackberry so he can do something important like ‘multi-task’.

Maybe put *hope* and *change* into a text message to send off to some fellow lunatic?

For Barney, what Nixon did was wrong, yet history shows that
his actions ensured the North would STAY at the peace talks.
Mining Haipong was a GOOD thing. It should have been done
years before!

I looked at the House GOP idea a little. It is much better, in my view. The insurance idea is far superior. Taking out barriers to allow freer flow of capital is a great idea.

As part of the deal, I think it would be wise to allocate maybe $200 billion for essentially a market-making system so that you can start some price discovery going again. It would be a system to put deals together via auctions, perhaps by unpackaging some of these highly jerry-rigged deals and re-packaging them in simpler forms. Once that happens, Wall Street and the hedge fund community will start seeing opportunities and they’ll take care of the trading on their own.

If you reframe the issue, you may have a better chance:

Barney should do the right thing: Resign, and turn himself over to the law to be imprisoned for a thorough buggering.

McCain can expect a huge onslaught from the media and democrats in the next few days. They will put enormous pressure on him to cave. They will invent polls that show Obama running away with the election and the American people against him. They will poison the minds of the American people and scare them to death trying to turn them against McCain. Please stay strong, Mac. We are behind you. If he caves, its all over.

Well I hope this thread doesn’t get pulled. I have never seen so many pulled threads as in the last few days.

Actually, that's because Free Republic was broken for a while, until John Rob plucked his magic twanger and got it running again.

Woohoo...new meeting just announced. Let the adults run things this time and I predict McCain will be able to announce a deal before Bush’s bedtime...

The Dow futures are showing a fall for tomorrow. The investment banks aren't feeling so glib about stealing the taxpayer's money any more.

Gold and Silver are currently up on the international market.

Easy to understand why Barney is gay. He grew up with sister Ann Lewis and learned at a very young age to dislike women.
