Why don’t you purchase or update a computer that will handle animated graphics instead of expecting others to be denied the pleasure?

Bandwidth limitations are largely for the benefit of stricken areas. Slow connections ride along for free.

At a time of emergency on a high-volume live thread, I think it's no problem and maybe even common courtesy for us to post links instead of graphics for those who need it.

This isn't a matter of pleasure as much as it is to accommodate those FReepers who are reduced to dial-up internet access when their electricity is lost. Currently, there are a lot of FReepers who have weathered this storm, along with at least 4 million people who are without electricity.

In addition, folks have a bad habit of hotlinking graphics from sites that can not handle the traffic load. There have been countless numbers of posts deleted by the admin mods for hot linking Associated Press and Getty photos.

That is why we keep graphics to a minimum on this thread. If you want to start a photo gallery thread about Ike, please do so. Thanks.

Many folks are on the move, on dial-up or wireless internet, The large graphics make the threads load real slowwww :-)

Sometimes DSL is lost and people have to go to dial up during a storm.

You are being “denied the pleasure” because NN is kind enough to think of the rest of us out there who are either in the path of the storm and no power and/or low computer bandwith or for us evacuees who are simply freeping from our cell phones as our ONLY source of hurricane info. The graphics and such makes it very difficult and stressful for the rest of us...who are trying to get much needed info.

Thank You!

A fair question.

Much of the problem is the DSL link, not the computer itself, being taxed - it is the combination. I’m sure I’m not alone in having limitations, or we would all have fifty windows with web cams looking at each other while we’re doing these threads.

I’d love to have a quad core with a T3 line at my house, but alas I don’t have that dream system - and where I live I’m lucky to even have low grade DSL. (I live in one of those small towns where we cling to our guns and religion)

Some of us have a high speed machine and connection but the FR server still has hiccups from the recent outages. Heavy graphics don’t help. Other websites have no problems.

Please don’t take offense at either my answer or that of others who flew to my defense before I even saw your note... I was off exploring other hurricane data in the interim.

My answer was serious, and I didn’t take your question as being a personal slam at me, and no offense was taken by me. I thought it was a fair question, and deserved a fair answer, and I hope you saw my answer as respecting the question as being fair. As well, I believe I was respectful in my initial request, and provided a reason, and it was answered just as respectfully. Some others may have been terse, but I’ve seen some reasons in the past that inspire their knee jerk reactions, and I understand that too.

We just have to make accommodation on threads like this in some ways so as many as possible can partake of them. Sometimes we have to remind each other in kindness of limits, as I did, so we can be as FRiendly as possible.

(now... I suspect I’m about 150 posts behind or so... I hope no major fight broke out in the interim... I almost don’t want to look...)
