Hurricane Ike Live Thread IV
NOAA/NHC ^ | 14 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 11:29:13 PM PDT by NautiNurse

The eyewall of Hurricane Ike crossed Galveston Island in the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports indicate as many as 20,000 residents of Galveston Island chose not to evacuate as storm surge engulfed the island. The Freeport Chief of Police reported as many as 2000 residents did not evacuate as flood waters swamped coastal communities. There are widespread reports of power outages and coastal flooding throughout the Texas/Louisiana region. The U.S. Coast Guard received hundreds of calls Friday afternoon to rescue people stranded by flood waters along the barrier islands and Galveston Bay communities.

Multiple fires broke out in the Greater Houston area fueled by strong winds. Fire fighting efforts were hampered by flood waters. Brennan's Restaurant, a landmark in Houston, burned to the ground. A 584-foot freighter crippled in the Gulf of Mexico and its crew of 22 survived the storm after The U.S. Coast Guard was forced to abort rescue efforts Friday afternoon due to foul weather

Gulf Coast wholesale gasoline prices jumped to nearly $5 a gallon over fears that water and wind damage could keep the facilities closed for days or longer. Oil companies had shut down 97.5 percent of production in the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning and were battening down refineries and petrochemical plants in an area that accounts for one-fifth of U.S. refining capacity.

Exxon Mobil reported evacuating workers from its Gulf Coast offshore platforms and onshore facilities in the anticipated path of Ike, shutting down daily production of about 36,000 barrels of oil and 270 million cubic feet of gas..

You’re dog sounds smarter than most people...

Oh she's definitely a go getter...

Hate's illegals (cats; squirrels)

She's pro hunting (same cats; squirrels)

Appreciates a strong woman (me!)

And she HATES change.

There you go, Thena aka Psycho Dog and I will be voting for McPalin. ;-)

San Leon is marked properly on your map. So many of the maps show it further south where Tx City is.

If they were on the west side of Bolivar, it’s a 25-30 mile walk in high water to the road where it turns north to Winnie at the first opportunity. From Gilchrist, maybe somewhere between 5-10 miles. It’s surely possible for most but lots of elderly and small children would have trouble with the current and high water.

My friend in Winnie had severe damage. Gators come up on his property after our regular summer thunderstorms so I imagine he’s got the onset of a gator farm going on over there now.

We’re off to the deer lease for a few days to prepare for hunting season. I just wanted to thank you for the Ike threads and all of the support. God Bless!

“are you going to change your screenname after your 2nd is born?”

Nah, probably not.

Like Psycho Dog, I don’t do change very well.

I will make my hubby lurker get a screenname with the new kiddos name, to make it fair I guess. Anyways DrewsDad is taken. ;0)

NOAA sat has added more images. fyi--I am not at all interested in viewing dead bodies. I have seen enough in my career.

“Meyerland checking in, still no power.”

I saw a map yesterday and it looked like your area was either on or in the next day or so expecting power. So maybe a little comfort there.

It amazes me that our area (closer to the water) has power and so many others don’t. My dad said it was b/c our power lines are underground...

Prayers you get yours up soon. Thank the Lord for the good weather!

“Thena aka Psycho Dog and I will be voting for McPalin.”

You oughta try to register her, if the illegals and dead can vote....I hear you don’t even need I.D.

That is actually more infuriating than it is funny, but hey what can you do?

This is interesting.

Apparently, a hoax was spread that if you went and got in line at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center, you would get a $500 FEMA card. (not true.) So all these people went and got in line apparently EARLY this morning (hundreds of them) waiting on the doors to open to get their cards. There are signs all around that say NO FEMA CARDS HERE. The news crew went in and told the people that it just wasn’t true. THEY ARE STILL IN LINE AND WON’T LEAVE. One woman they interviewed said “New Ahleans folks got their cards after Katrina and we want ours.” One said “I am not leaving this line cause if I do, then I find out these other people got their cards and I didn’t, I will be so mad”

Did anyone else see that?

Thanks for this local update. It is clear that the Katrina response has set a precedent. I wonder how many of these folks are NOLA Katrina evacuees looking for a second handout. Very sad.

Morning,

Haven’t reached Uncle Pat yet. Left a message for him, he’s an interesting fellow. Doesn’t get up until 11ish, usually eats one meal a day, and then stays up til all hours of the night on the computer.

He’s going stir crazy, heard from Mom and Dad that they talked to him yesterday. Messages are all in that he call!

Crotchety old man.

:-)

It’s almost time to start clean up. Ick. I really want to procrastinate, but it wont get done with me whining about it, so off we go to yard work. Phones will be accessable. Ewww, sweaty ear pieces. LOL

“I wonder how many of these folks are NOLA Katrina evacuees looking for a second handout. “

Looked like more than a few of em. And according to click2houston.com, it was a text message hoax, that a couple of radio stations picked up on and gave the info also. Allegedly....

Ok, I think the Blue Roof place opens at 9 or 10, she said. I will be heading that way here pretty soon.

Don’t work too hard!

Were they the group on Obama’s text message list? LOL

Have a good one all, we’re off to the hill country to forget about this storm for a few days. Gotta go feed da deers.

Rika, I know you’ll get it done sooner than you think. While ours looked bad, it really went much faster than we thought. And we started before the cool front and had to deal with the nasty skeeters. But the second day, in the cooler weather was so much easier.

I want my FEMA card..... NOW!!! LOL The ones from Rita came in the mail. My Mom lived in Lake Charles and we registered her on line for hers and she got it a few days later in the snail mail. They’d better not give ‘em all away before I get back to town. :-)

That just proves my point about listening to the news media and believing anything they say. Many of them do not check anything, they just make it up as they go. Whatever brings on the drama.
