The eyewall of Hurricane Ike crossed Galveston Island in the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports indicate as many as 20,000 residents of Galveston Island chose not to evacuate as storm surge engulfed the island. The Freeport Chief of Police reported as many as 2000 residents did not evacuate as flood waters swamped coastal communities. There are widespread reports of power outages and coastal flooding throughout the Texas/Louisiana region. The U.S. Coast Guard received hundreds of calls Friday afternoon to rescue people stranded by flood waters along the barrier islands and Galveston Bay communities.
Multiple fires broke out in the Greater Houston area fueled by strong winds. Fire fighting efforts were hampered by flood waters. Brennan's Restaurant, a landmark in Houston, burned to the ground. A 584-foot freighter crippled in the Gulf of Mexico and its crew of 22 survived the storm after The U.S. Coast Guard was forced to abort rescue efforts Friday afternoon due to foul weather
Gulf Coast wholesale gasoline prices jumped to nearly $5 a gallon over fears that water and wind damage could keep the facilities closed for days or longer. Oil companies had shut down 97.5 percent of production in the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning and were battening down refineries and petrochemical plants in an area that accounts for one-fifth of U.S. refining capacity.
Exxon Mobil reported evacuating workers from its Gulf Coast offshore platforms and onshore facilities in the anticipated path of Ike, shutting down daily production of about 36,000 barrels of oil and 270 million cubic feet of gas..

Wonderful news, especially about the neighborly help. Thanks for your report.
“Praises: Gorgeous weather — made the lack of a/c (or even fans) more bearable”
THAT is a miracle from heaven like I have never seen. Houston w/cool weather in September and right after a hurricane! Unheard of. Praise report indeed!
Oh my, you REALLY need to be careful outside. There are a lot of loose limbs that could fall and hit you. Be very cautious out there. And please don’t FREEZE to death LOL
I surely hope there is FEMA money left on that card to get the lady of the house something really nice after buying the boring chainsaw. And don’t get any funny ideas about an apron, a new iron or anything practical.
Hahahha,,,starting to get the hot flashes too, so freezing to death is definitely not an option now or in the near future.
LMAO!!!,,,Works fer me...;0)
Oh boy .. you don’t have to answer my
question. So sorry about that barn.
Guess you’ll be having a barn raising
event one of these days.
I just wonder what you’ll have shot
off your head then .. LOL
No electricity is so not fun, but
I know from all the other tragedies
folks are experiencing, it could
have been a whole lot worse. You’re
here. Ike is one mean SOB. Wait ‘til
you see the barrier islands pics .. just
horrific.
Good you’re back in FR world, which
surprisingly (/sarc ;) has been acting up
a little .. yup, it has.
Been passing around the backup site,
just in case folks don’t know about it.
It’s the only way I could get on FR
last night.

Take good care .. did you really have to
go back to work so soon?
off subject, but I think Mike Huckabee has been freepin cause I just heard him say something I heard here on FR a couple of weeks ago...
Kinda cool, I thought.
Sorry, but humble’s got the state concession for that.
I hear ya. They have a problem with the unit into the entrance on the non-food side. It seems to have been going on for several months. I still like it for one-stop shopping although we’re going to start grocery shopping at Food Town. They’re way cheaper on some things which surprised us.
I got the doc to switch up some of my medicine today. I’ll be saving hundreds of dollars a year using the Walmart system ($10 for 3 month supply) YIPPPEEEEEEEE!! My husband is already using them and it’s saving him a lot over our Aetna prescription plan.
Hey, one little comment about the mild weather in TX, and I get picked on.
Compared to alaska an Saudi Arabia, ya’ll have mild weather, so poo.
Glad to hear you are ok and that your dog came home.
Has the generator warning been posted at least 50 times yet about the distance and the importance of VENTING?
Weeeelllllll, isn’t T.V. a necessity??? How could one survive without it?? I learned last night, on the way home, that my 8 year old was just “gonna die” without electricity at home b/c he could not watch his beloved t.v. or play his playstation.
His band played at the first freeper ball, so yeah, I guess he freeps.
So Ike has been gone for half a week, and the recovery will take months. Will you be keeping this thread going or starting a recovery thread or what?
School of hard knocks, that’s what
he’s in now ... you’re such a meany.
You should’ve checked into an air
conditioned motel with plasma TV, fer
goodness sakes.
LOL ..
Duncan Hunter’s son is also a freeper.
The last time we weren’t without power long but I made a pallet with pillows and played a kids video for my little ones on my lap top, which I put on the floor.. Even served snacks. Kind of like going to a drive in movie:’)
