Hurricane Ike Live Thread IV
NOAA/NHC ^ | 14 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 11:29:13 PM PDT by NautiNurse

The eyewall of Hurricane Ike crossed Galveston Island in the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports indicate as many as 20,000 residents of Galveston Island chose not to evacuate as storm surge engulfed the island. The Freeport Chief of Police reported as many as 2000 residents did not evacuate as flood waters swamped coastal communities. There are widespread reports of power outages and coastal flooding throughout the Texas/Louisiana region. The U.S. Coast Guard received hundreds of calls Friday afternoon to rescue people stranded by flood waters along the barrier islands and Galveston Bay communities.

Multiple fires broke out in the Greater Houston area fueled by strong winds. Fire fighting efforts were hampered by flood waters. Brennan's Restaurant, a landmark in Houston, burned to the ground. A 584-foot freighter crippled in the Gulf of Mexico and its crew of 22 survived the storm after The U.S. Coast Guard was forced to abort rescue efforts Friday afternoon due to foul weather

Gulf Coast wholesale gasoline prices jumped to nearly $5 a gallon over fears that water and wind damage could keep the facilities closed for days or longer. Oil companies had shut down 97.5 percent of production in the Gulf of Mexico by Friday morning and were battening down refineries and petrochemical plants in an area that accounts for one-fifth of U.S. refining capacity.

Exxon Mobil reported evacuating workers from its Gulf Coast offshore platforms and onshore facilities in the anticipated path of Ike, shutting down daily production of about 36,000 barrels of oil and 270 million cubic feet of gas..

I here ya. They were still lined up earlier today to get the freebies at DPHS stadium. About 20% of the vehicles idling on Center for over an hour were suburbans and 1-Ton trucks. LOL

Hey stupids, Food Town is one block south and open with ice for $1.00, no waiting. I’m betting y’all are buring way more than that in fuel idling for over an hour.

Now just when is my Walmart going to open? I really need my Walmart. Actually, I can’t imagine what I’d buy if it opened today because I don’t need anything but it’s just like a security blanket for me anymore.

In my small town in the Midwest all we get is that frozen toxic china shrimp that I refuse to eat.

Yeah that’s what I heard. I was thinking rush hour but that’s probably not a problem right now, huh?

You are right. It wasn’t like we found out Thursday that a storm was coming Friday. We’d all been following it for 5 or more days and it was pretty much a sure bet where it was going to hit. Rita jogged slightly east leaving Houston in good shape so many thought it would be another Rita (I hoped it would but you don’t get that lucky every time one is pointed right at ya so I figured Galveston or a little west). But even if they said it’s going to be another Rita, Bolivar to High Island would still be in grave danger. I think the problem with Ike was the surge was earlier and stronger than anyone thought.

When you are in an area that is basically cut off except for one road in and out, you leave early. You do not wait until the last minute. You leave WAY early. I would have gotten out of the area BEFORE the ferry closed whether I went east or west. The announcement of the ferry closing would be my sign that it’s time.

Under a local wood embargo - some silly bo weavil spotted elm disease.

You can’t get a tree removed in Northern VA.

Fortunately, I have a woodstove, for just such an occasion.

Plus, I save a fortune on heat.

Tree guys will come to your house, cut the tree down, and leave it nicely sawed into 16” lengths on your yard.

The will not remove it - forbidden by law.

So I pay college kids to follow them around with a log splitter.

Got about six cord stacked up.

;)

“Kids are getting stir crazy. Hope school starts back soon.”

I’m a school teacher and trust me, being in school does not stop the “stir craziness”...hhahahahaha

Our school doesn’t have power yet..I refuse to teach without AC...call me spoiled, but I can go without power and I can teach teenagers, but I cannot do both.

downtown Huffman has power

Huffman has a downtown?

Is that the Chevron or the dirt yard? ;-)

Me, I'm camped out at work tonight, nursing our new generator.

Stay AWAY from the air intake.

The suction is incredible.

MOST of the schools aren’t starting until Monday, including ours. I think it is wreckless to try to do otherwise. With the gas and food shortage, they are just asking for MORE problems if they do. I teach at a private school, so we can be a little more flexible. The public schools have to deal with parents wanting to send their kids back so they can get the free lunches and get them out of their hair.

Hopefully most of the schools will be able to start Monday though so the kids don’t have so many make up days.

Less impressive — we lost our power again 30 minutes later, and just regained it this afternoon. Oh well.

Those big oaks are sure tricky,,,

Tree guys must cut off the limbs as they go up,,,

Rope off the top and take them down in sections,,,

Local news showed 5-6 that fell during IKE,,,

On houses,,,No Mo’House...
