-"As president, John McCain will strongly support funding for promising research programs, including amniotic fluid and adult stem cell research and other types of scientific study that do not involve the use of human embryos". - www.johnmccain.com
The current platform "recognizes" Bush's support for a limited amount of research on embryonic stem cells and praises his opposition to federal funding for the effort. McCain, in contrast, supports embryonic stem cell research, touting his position as evidence of the "straight talk" he offers to conservatives.
"We would very much like to see a resolution passed by the platform committee that would encourage a ban on killing of embryos for their stem cells," Parro said. "If that were introduced, we certainly would hope that Senator McCain would not oppose it."
I understand there a CELLS from the available embryos which have been approved for testing. That’s not my concern here.
Actually, I’m just trying to get the straight story.
McCain’s spokesperson screwed up or McCain is throwing us a curve. See this thread:

Nope - but good try.
God's Word tells us that He already knows how this election will turn out. We have a responsibility to participate in our civil government to the degree that we fear God and honor God first.
Our "job" is not to take credit for a candidate getting elected. All of that glory goes directly to our Heavenly Father.
Our "job" is to obey God.
Isnt this his official stance from his official web site?Doesn't matter, only a personal phone call will do.
Evidence has been provided. Have you abandoned your thread?
You are a copping out just like the Priest and Levite and not lifting a finger but letting the innocent die. They thought they obeyed God too. But they didn’t in reality. Faith without works is dead.
Maybe their "caps" key broke?
yeah, I saw that thread earlier. I think the spokesperson misspoke. McCain has a very clean pro-life record going back decades, so advancing stem cell research (v. adult stem cells) would be counterintuitive.
A McCain spokesperson was quoted as saying McCain supports embryonic stem cell research.

Me, I don’t need a personal phone call. Just accurate information. Perhaps this McCain guy messed up.
I realize that this is an anonymous message board and you don't know me - but quit being an idiot.
I have participated in the pro-life movement since the early 1980's.
I have taken women into my home so that they didn't feel foced to have an abortion.
I have gone "dumpster-diving" at night and sorted through trash bags full of bloody gauze and baby parts - holding them in my very hands - just so those babies could have a proper burial.
What EXACTLY have you done that gives you the right to cast the aspersions that you have - just because your "bloody-handed" candidate wants to get elected?
John McCain can repent of his position - and I'm praying that he does.
I really hope the spokesperson was wrong. This issue had been very good for McCain with Conservatives.
They need to get this cleared up quickly. Stuff like this spreads fast among people who find it hard to trust McCain.
I wonder if McCain’s people read FR? They should. I know they do a lot of “drive by” posts.
You are wrong about John McCain on the pro-life issues, but you knew that. Buzz off ...
You sure don't win the most "sourced" post of the day. Why don't you begin by telling me where I'm wrong. If you actually took the time to read this thread you would see that I have posted many examples. Why don't you try posting ONE?
Hi, everyone,
New video from CatholicVote.com
Powerful
http://www.creativeminorityreport.com/2008/09/new-video-from-catholicvotecom.html
The existing strands that Bush released were supposed to be split to infinity just about. He could be referring to research on those strands. That would not entail the creation of new Embryos for research.
Even using Federal dollars for existing strands is wrong.
This is McCain at the Saddleback forum:
WARREN: Another issue, stem cells. Weve had the scientific break-through of creating pluri-potent (ph) stem cells through adult stem cells.
MCCAIN: Yes.
WARREN: So would you favor or oppose the federal funding of embryonic stem cell research since we had this other break-through?
MCCAIN: For those of us in the pro-life community this has been a great struggle and a terrible dilemma because were also taught other obligations that we have as well. Ive come down on the side of stem cell research. But I am wily optimistic that skin cell research, which is coming more and more into focus and practicability, will make this debate an academic one.
You are aware that John McCain is pro-life and now is coming out for adult stem cell research, aren’t you?
If so, this Brian Rogers guy was shooting from the hip with his statements, or the author of the article left out some information to start a controversy.
Again, I’m giving McCain the benefit of the doubt. At worst, he’s changed his position. At best, there’s some bad information circulating on a topic that is very important to many conservatives who have just warmed up to McCain.
The MSM would love to blow this out of proportion. This topic is a win-win for them.
It’s done. I agree, but the babies are already dead. If we went no further than what has been done, I could live with it.
