Sea-freakin'-wall Boulevard. What a bunch of IDIOTS.
I’m really sorry to be making light of your loss.
But....seriously.. houses are already being washed out at Jamaica Beach... and, we’re still 10-12 hours away from landfall.
If I were you, I’d assume my home on Galveston is lost.... then, just hope for the best.
Thank GOD!.. YOU’RE not there!!
Sure hope it works out for you...
I pray they'll come through all right.

I never heard of anyone saying this. People failed to evacuate for Katrina for all kinds of reasons, good and bad. But this is the first time anyone's suggested to me a significant number of persons thought Katrina was hyped, or that NOLA has nothing to fear from hurricanes.
By all means, let's abandon this fruitless exchange.
You getting any high wind?
;<)
Nary a leaf is fluttering here.
!!!
Good Lord. 16 hours before landfall and look at that flooding. Unreal, and it’s only going to get worse.

Thank you!
She just emailed and said that they’re staying and things are battened down. But thank you for the locale info. That makes me feel a bit better.
The family has just lost a son in Iraq in April and they’re making sure his belongings are safe with them.
God bless and keep you all safe in the great state of Texas!
There are STILL idiots walking around at the beach. Not on the west end of the island, though—the water there appears to be 2-3 feet deep.
I seem to remember Rita or some other hurricane missing Galveston the same year at Katrina....perhaps they were a bit complacent?
The maritime office for Cyprus said the freighter is owned by Perovo Shipping Co. Ltd. in Cyprus and it is managed by TEO Shipping Corp. in Greece.
A search on Equasis, an international website designed to gather government information on safety issues, showed the freighter was detained in China in May 2008 with 28 deficiencies and detained in Russia for five days in 2007 when 16 deficiencies were found. It was unclear from the site whether there were any serious problems involved. Many other inspections listed showed fewer or no deficiencies including a U.S. Coast Guard check of the freighter in Houston in February which found only two deficiencies.
The website lists the Antalina as a bulk carrier built in 1984.

The man speaking is Steve LeBlanc, the Galveston City Manager. Water and sewage to the west part of the island is cut off, not to the whole island as I’d heard earlier.
No one can get to that ship to save them now. God be with them. Let us pray.
May God bless and comfort him and may God in His divine mercy bless and protect them all. I will add them to the fervent prayers I have been sending up for all in Ike's path.
I’ve been looking for the famous NWS/NOAA warning about “people not heeding evacuation orders” but can’t find it.
I grew up in Amherst County, not far south of where Camille unloaded, and I know those areas well (Glasgow, Massie’s Mill, Davis Creek). I was just shy of three years old, so I don’t remember any of it, although my mom’s told me that there were helicopters back and forth over our hours for two days hauling people to the nearby junior high, being used as an aid station.
The Tye and Piney never returned to their old banks after that storm. They cut new courses, and to this day, they’re both much more floodprone than they were prior to 1969.

Has anyone heard anything else about that ship stranded in the path of the storm? I can’t even fathom how frightened they must be!
I missed the % of people they believe stayed on the island..did you hear?
************
40% stayed
Will be interesting to see if there is any increas at 5p on intensity. I think Ike is a cat 3, but not sure the winds are mixing to the surface still.
LOL! OK, that’s a well-needed laugh right there!
