Instead of a small tight ring of the strongest Category 2 winds wrapped around the eye, Ike’s maximum sustained winds extend out a whopping 80 miles from the center. The maximum wind field is jaw dropping.

The Florida avocados are huge with smooth skin. A pile of them were thrown from the tree during some forgotten storm several years ago. We added them to the hurricane supplies. A can of tuna is used to illustrate relative size.

Anderson- Don’t any of those preening “journalists” think law enforcement has anything better to do than scrape them off the buildings?

I had heard on Orlando local news last night that the track would probably go further and further north each time it came out.

(Chertoff responding to evac-fatigue:)

“Unless you’re fatigued with living, I suggest you want to take seriously a storm of this size and scale,” he said Thursday. “This is not a game of chicken with Mother Nature.”

We’ve lost fellow-hurricane-freepers to many things, but not ever to hurricanes. That would be an extreme downer.

Good news!

Heard from Dog Gone. He has been in Louisiana doing hurricane relief work where there has been no electricity. Returned home yesterday, and now is rushing his own family hurricane preparations to completion. He asked me to pass on this info. Sez he will check in as soon as he can.

Godspeed, Dog Gone.

This storm is no stronger Alicia in 83, San Leon will be OK. Just about everyone here is staying. My neighbor has a concrete/stone three story house. I will be fine I am on the high side of San Leon (12’), I worry about the folks staying on the low side (4’)of San Leon.

Greg Bostwick at KFDM-6 in Beaumont just predicting high possibility of 5-7 ft of water in south Jefferson County below I-10, assuming levee will overtop. Recommending to get out to higher ground.

A lot of people who weren’t leaving here before are now taking off in the morning. We’re headed to Dallas.

What a pisser...

Do you want your space on the Free Republic Memorial to be decorated in any particular way?
