Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

We are in Arkansas and not likely threatened by the storm except maybe some rain and thunderstorms (hopefully not tornadoes).

They are forecasting a significant (10-40% chance) threat from winds over 60 mph for southwest and southcentral Arkansas

My wife just got off Dauphin Island and the flooding. She’ll be heading back to Memphis with the students in tow, a day short of the time they paid for with the camp.

Hey Ditter,

Yeah I ran out to Kroger at lunch to get some stuff for dinner and talk about insane! There must have been 40 cars waiting for the pumps! I went inside and I have never seen that many people inside the store. People just grabbing anything hey could. Kroger had all the checkout lanes open and they were rolling it in!

Thanks for the info - I hate to wish this storm on anyone but you are right, many of the storms track eastward...

Gas is up 10 cent a gallon here in Georgia from yesterday to today. Don’t know if it’s because of Ike or something else...

I've collected ice in gallon size ziploc bags for the last couple of days. I bagged everything in the fridge & freezer in garbage bags and in the event I have to, I can throw it out before I get out of here to go someplace with electricity & air conditioning.

I did a poll of my neighbors and most are staying. A few have boarded up but most have not, perhaps they will tomorrow before things get ugly.

I drove down the main drag and while many businesses have closed, you can still get a hamburger, chicken or sandwiches at the local establishments.

I received an email from a co-worker whose home is one block off the seawall in Galveston. He and another employee are going to ride things out in a house on Broadway in Galveston. I told him I didn't think it was wise to stay. He said they had stocked up on essentials (beer, whiskey, scotch, etc.) Not sure we will be seeing them when we go back to work.

"My wife just got off Dauphin Island and the flooding."

Glad to hear that.

In 1699, Dauphin Island was the capital of all the Louisiana Territories.

Just across the bay, at Fort Morgan, there's a plaque that commerates the landing of Prince Madoc, in 1170AD.

I am hoping to sleep through the worst of it. I am going to block the dog’s doggy door late Friday and then hopefully buy Sat morning, we should be through the worst of it.

Have you seen this website?

www.houstonhidefromthewind.org

It gives you the estimated sustained wind strength by zip code. Mine is saying about 75 mph.

My uncle is riding it out in Pasedena.

Did it shift right again? I just looked at stormpulse.com and now it looks like Houston is going to be “just” this side on the clean side of the storm.

"I boarded up for Rita, then saved the labeled plywood for future use. It took a good 20 hours to measure, cut and place the plywood for Rita - my neighbors all worked together to do three houses. We unpacked the plywood from the back of the garage and boarded up all three houses in 3 hours this afternoon."

That's the way to get things done! My sister (League City) was looking out her huge bedroom window this morning and saw her neighbors boarding up and thought that maybe they should think about buying some plywood. yikes
