Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.
Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.
The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

Looks like Austin will dodge the worst of it but, these damn things have a mind of their own.
My Dad lives in Houston but lucky for them, they’re in Colorado this week.
I’m getting a bad feeling about Ike. Because the forecasters couldn’t get a fix on its track and strength, I think a lot of people will have waited too long to make preps or evacuate. Dallas is only getting a trickle of critical-care evacuees right now. I fear many will be trapped on the highway during a last-minute bug out.
We are in Arkansas and not likely threatened by the storm except maybe some rain and thunderstorms (hopefully not tornadoes).
I am only telling everyone what we were told earlier today. We will see I guess.

97 feet of change of elevation in Florida is a sheer cliff. I know what you mean about flashfloods, but the surge will not get that high.
From the 5pm discussion, it looks like the eye is reforming to a larger eye. And the track trend is almost identical to Rita - now the center is right through Galveston Bay. I think it will keep shifting eastward, but not quite as far as Rita did. But if it stikes 50-60 miles east of Galveston, that will prevent the worst damage to the refining facilities and to Houston.
Well, the newest model has it coming dead overhead the house. We are at 95 and 30. Looks like I might have a house full also, ah well, misery loves company.LOL

Yes, I would like to eat crow on that projection *lol*. However, I/we see much similarities in the 8 weeks out to zero current polling data to that of the Clinton - H.W. Bush '92 election. H.W. really closed the polls gap on Wild Bill in the closing election weeks to the point we thought we finally dragged Clinton down. The day before the election even Clinton thought he was going to lose. Then the next day Clinton destroyed H.W. in the E.C. Currently, there is massive under-polling due to Obama dominating the youth vote. This is where McCain will lose, along with the large number of Republicans that will not vote in this election, or write-in Thompson or Romney. I/we are also very P.O.'d the way Rove is prostituting Palin. She is a great VP pick and a good person, but Rove has got her in way over her head, imo. The Biden-Palin debate(s) will be very interesting.
On topic, looking very bad for Houston-Galveston. My brother closed his downtown Houston law firm at noon today.

Yeah, really lucky! I have a friend in E. TX (nearly Tyler/Longview, who I emailed today because it’s looking more like it will head that direction. She’s not worried, except she said they keep getting refugees, and she helps out when they do (she’s a teacher). She said that some of them were very ungrateful and complain about the hospitality they get! Imagine that. Anyway, I think she’s going to get wet and wind, but maybe not that far north.

There are 150,000 of those in Harris county (Houston) left over from Katrina. Pretty much a worthless lot.
