Hurricane Ike Live Thread Part II
NOAA/NHC ^ | 10 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/10/2008 2:18:37 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Texas began issuing mandatory and voluntary evacuations as Hurricane Ike continued to strengthen and slowly moved toward an uncertain landfall destination in the western Gulf of Mexico. Texas Governor Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration in advance of the storm. Louisiana Governor Jindal released several hundred buses to Texas for evacuation assistance.

Reports from Cuba indicate widespread damage from Hurricane Ike, which raked the length of the island nation. The U.S. State Department again offered Cuba humanitarian assistance after a previous offer was declined by the Cuban government.

The stock market Wednesday rose as investors bought oil stocks and and oill futures fell.

Starting to develop a visible eye again...

It is amazing but the east end of Cuba is still getting soaked by the outer bands. You are right NN, this has the potential to be a storm that fills the entire GOM.

Before I get jumped by TX FReepers, I should mention east TX and the hill country are heavily forested (for Texas).

No, and the regular satellite images clearly show some extremely high cloud tops developing near the eye. Must be some tremendous convection going on there.

We’ve had squalls and gusty winds all day from Ike—never closer than 300 miles away. This storm has a loooong reach, folks.

Appropriate question, but “no” it is not a FR limit.

NautiN requests we keep graphics low-key and small size because (in emergencies in the affected area) broadband and net servers go down, no graphics load much faster o wireless and phone lines.

A hurricane thread can last three-four days, and is the only source of real news to many. 1500-2000 answers take a while to scroll through with graphics.

Twisters are probably the one thing we’d cancel a game over.

Well, I'd at least take an official's time out and wait a minute before punting. Other than that, ....

Yeah. We are out of the cone now. I don't know if that is permanent or not. People are still preparing like he's coming at us. I guess that's a good thing. I need to check on my dad. He's west of Victoria. I called during his last miss and he told me not to worry because he would get out of his mobile phone and stay in the barn. Parents!
