Saying that Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin "scares the hell out of me," former New York Mayor Ed Koch endorsed fellow Democrat Barack Obama on Tuesday.
In 2004, Koch backed President Bush for re-election saying the Republican incumbent was better equipped to combat international Islamic terrorism than Democratic candidate John Kerry.
Koch, who was mayor of New York from 1977 to 1989, said he has concluded that the country would be safer in the hands of Obama and running mate Joe Biden than presidential candidate John McCain and Palin.
"Protecting and defending the U.S. means more than defending us from foreign attacks," Koch said, citing such concerns as civil liberties, abortion rights, gay rights and access to health insurance.
Koch said he is particularly troubled by Palin's record in those areas.
"It's Palin primarily," he said. "She scares the hell out of me."
Koch called Palin a "plucky, exciting candidate" but also said: "If the vice president were ever called on to lead the country, there is no question in my mind that the experience and demonstrated judgment of Joe Biden is superior to that of Sarah Palin."

Good points. From your perspective is Palin hurting McCain among Jewish voters? Before she was selected as running mate, I had read in several places that McCain was on track to capture the most Jewish votes since Reagan (gee, I can’t imagine why). But I can see why Palin, despite energizing the base and independents, could hurt McCain among Jews. Do you think McCain has lost or will lose any Jewish support because of Palin?
He's like Grandpa Al Lewis without the effing vulgarity.

Yes, it's abortion "rights" and homosexual "rights" that are some of the key issues when choosing the leader of our country. Koch should be ashamed.
Who cares? Jews vote 90% RAT anyway. If they want to vote for the party that supports terrorists, that’s their problem.
Wait a minute . . . . let me get this straight. Ed Koch is afraid of a girl!!??
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha . . . . . . . . .
I always thought he was kind of a “girly-man”, he didn’t have to prove it!!!
I wish I knew the answer to that. The folks I know tend to be hardline socialists, and wouldn’t vote GOP if Eichman ran as a Dem. :(
Having a president with the middle name of Hussein scares me a lot more.
Anything more masculine than Richard Simmons scares Ed Koch.
Precisely. He’s an emasculated, liberal man. Of course a strong conservative woman scares him. All I can sy to him is, “Boooo!”
“Is there anything this liberal is concerned with that is actually a function of government?”
Is there anything liberals in general support that are in accordance with God’s Will?
And if not, for Whom are they working?
What’s Ed kvetching about? He’s never going to need an abortion.
Not much on the social issues that Koch cites.
Basically pro-life and against gay marriage. That’s ‘scary’?
It must be a visceral reaction to the moose-hunting mama from a metrosexual city dweller.
They can write-off NTC no matter what - but Florida....
“I think Ed Koch is scared as a Jew by Sarah’s being an evangelical Christian background.”
OK. That makes sense (in its own twisted way, since evangelicals support free worship and Israel both) ... what doesnt make sense is why Koch is not on the same bandwagon as Lieberman. I figured its a woman-owning-a-gun thing.
Koch is probably senile at this point in time..
Exactly.
No offense to Koch, and I am grateful to him for occasionally (and very publicly) taking on the leftmost ramparts of his party, but
he’s clearly (back) on the I.V. kool-aid drip re: Obama. Insane.
It’s fine to say you prefer Obamabiden’s policies, whatever, fine. But to say that the GOP’s “bottom of the ticket” person is inexperienced as a reason for choosing the Dem’s “top of the ticket” person who is at LEAST as inexperienced, is just inconsistent.
With Koch it’s all about gay rights and abortion.
Poor old fool. Guess he wants to be able to eat lunch in NYC once again.
I guess we won’t see his articles in the Jewish Press anymore...
Linda Lingle is for Palin
Rudy is for Palin
Joe Lieberman is for Palin
because they put their country FIRST, despite their differences.
