He's danced over caucuses and superdelegates, skated past two dozen debates and 19 months on the trail, rolled through Jeremiah Wright and Hillary Clinton -- and a hockey mom from Alaska could be his undoing?
Eight weeks out -- his lead in the polls erased (for now), the money not quite flowing the way he anticipated, women voters impressed by the newest newcomer -- the weight of the race falls on Sen. Barack Obama's shoulders.
(And your real-world alert: President Bush announces Tuesday morning that he's pulling out 8,000 US troops out of Iraq by February.)
Yes, this period of the race has been all about Gov. Sarah Palin -- but how long it lasts is going to be up to Obama. Smart political types are looking for a sharper message -- one that reminds voters of the big stakes in the race, not the little items on a running mate's resume.
(Who usually wins when a presidential candidate takes on a vice-presidential one? How does Obama take on an Obama-like phenomenon? What does it say about Obama's support that it was soft enough to flee this quickly? What, in the end, do women want?)
All that work, gone? The new ABC News/Washington Post poll pegs it at McCain 49, Obama 47 among likely voters -- inside the margin of error, but with a name we're not used to seeing in the lead.

McCain needs to get busy and bring this stuff up during the debates. Is there anymore on the Whitey tape? That would do it and shut Obama up for good.
who has the bigger audience of LIKELY VOTERS?
Rush? Hanity? or CNN,FNC, and MSNBC?
Welcome to the NFL, Rookie!
Obama is the latest of the Democratic girly men. All that’s left to join Kerry and Gore is the firearm photo op. That would be too outrageous. Maybe they could hire stand-in.
Oh, he was vetted, but for the wrong reasons. His was vetting my image, by slickly delivered talk, by pumped up community “involvment”—unfortunately many voters are voting based on image and not their bank statements.
I think the guy can still pull this election out. Which means we had better work as hard as we can if we want to beat him.
This election is turning into something neat: the ghost of Ronald Reagan versus the ghost of Karl Marx.
If the story doesn't make it to ABC/CBS/NBC/CNN/MSNBC, it won't be reaching the swing/undecided voters.
That might depend on the news outlet:
NBC-national Barak Channel
ABC-always Barak Channel
MSNBC-more same national Barak Channel
CBS-choose Barak system
—can anyone else add to this?
That's not at all unexpected.
That’s Schadenfreud baby!
That’s Schadenfreud baby!
0nada, change in Presidential representation to "present"
I am not talking about the media keeping the story alive. I am talking about our side doing that in the debates, on the campaign trail, etc.
As even Dowdy Mo (from the Slimes) pegs 0be as "All cage, No bird".
In with the new newOut with the old new.
Thanks for the welcome . . . been watching for a very long time. - Betsy
Quote: “. . . rolled through Jeremiah Wright and Hillary Clinton. . .”
Really, rolled through Wright? Come on ABC, if you think Wright didn’t damage Obama, just look at how he did in the primaries after the Wright revelations happened. This damaged him with the working class folks and he is not getting them back. Oh, one more thing, if you think Wright is over, you are wrong.
Wow. I was referring to Barack Obama as the rookie.
Man, calling a six year lurker a nOOb on her very first post. Not even I’m that much of a score-keeper.
In any case, welcome to the land of the posting! I think you’ll find it much more fun this way!
Rush on air has said consistently 1/2 of his listeners are NOT conservatives. In fact many self described liberals listen to him because he provides articulate statments of the conservative view.
Conservatives win elections
men will decide the winner in this election.
It is the conservative that is agonizing the drive by media.
