During the Republican presidential primary, immigration was such an important topic that candidates were tripping over each other to be seen as the toughest defender of the nation's borders. The issue became so hot that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the GOP presidential nominee, was forced to disavow his own immigration reform bill because it was seen by many Republicans as too lenient. But a parade of Republicans came to the convention podium in St. Paul last week with barely a mention of immigration. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, 38 speakers addressed the GOP crowd and only one - unknown Kansas farmer Carolyn Dunn - even uttered the word "immigration." There was not a single mention of border security or amnesty from McCain or his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

This dovetails with the story about the "SAINT PAUL FOUR", the four Young Republicans who were told by panicky Secret Services agents in St. Paul last week to take down their simple sign *BUILD THE FENCE* at the Convention Center, by the G.O.P. "Control Room". Whomever the heck THEY are.

If people want to vote for the GOP candidate that doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is the willingness to overlook the obvious flaws in our presidential candidate to do so. Now is not time to stop hammering him and the rest of the GOP on the issue.

If they think they’re getting a free pass they will run with it.

McCain hasn’t backed off his support for comprehensive liberal immigration reform. McCain says the American people spoke out loud and clear. First step will be to secure the borders. Then I guess its onto amnesty.

And where is Sarah Palin on immigration reform and amnesty? Laura Ingraham says Palin opposes illegal immigration. We shall see.

Mega bump. The slavish hero worship of Palin is obnoxious. But the fact that its occuring before she has specified her position on many issues including illegal immigration is unforgiveable. For many on FR, its not about protecting this country, its about ensuring the candidate with the “R” next to their name gets elected.

Once McCain fires Dr. Juan Hernandez, a close inner circle supporter of his as we speak, and a traitor on this border/national security issue, then we will know it is not all cheap, sneaky talk-which is what it is to-date IMHO.

The right has had little to cheer about, so I can forgive the euphoria - I even allowed myself to indulge in it for a few days.

But now, back to work. Palin's not the top of the ticket; we still have Juan to contend with.

The issue is coming back folks. They know the unseen elephant in the room.

McCain’s campaign earlier tanked on this issue. It did because of those that were aware of his stance.

Many don’t know where he stands and they are going to find out soon.

I like what they’re saying about Sarah Palin but I have yet to really see for myself. I am pretty tired of her name being invoked like it’s a magical word that ends all arguments.

I’m going to start telling them “Your jedi mind tricks don’t work on me”.

I noticed today on Fox, that all at once, this issue is emerging again with the story about those people in the ice cream shop. They even went on to say it was an illegal alien that caused the death of those people.

They haven’t done that in months. I can see where this is going and McCain has no good answers because he is shameful on this issue.

Shows you a person can never get by when they seek to ignore a big issue and hope no one will make them notice.

...you’re right! And staying home so you can cross your arms and pout will help Obama get in. Then...a dem majority in Congress and Senate. Then obliterating the electoral college. Perfect! Now you have a democracy! Majority rules. NY/Chicago/LA/San Fran decide who’s going to be President from here on out.

Yep. It makes complete sense to stay home. Stick to your guns on immigration and allow Obama into the White House. It won’t be 2 years before your life changes drastically, in every way.

His plan to "secure the borders" is so much smoke and mirrors.

He has publicly stated that his plan to secure the borders is having the border governors (Who are all Open-Borders Advocates) certify the border is secure.

Get back to me when he gets serious on the issue. All he is doing now is saying and doing things he hopes will lull conservatives to sleep enough so that they will vote for him.

I am afraid that Sarah Palin is part of this subterfuge because not one of McCain's wrong-headed and liberal positions on issues such as Global Warming, Embryonic Stem-Cell Research, Amnesty, his big-government solutions to every problem have changed.

The problem is, that even with McCain you are going to get the same result on several of the same issues.

BTW, if McCain loses and Obama becomes POTUS, it will be no one else's fault except McCain for being such a RINO.

It won't be because a conservative chose not vote for him, but because he spent so much time poking conservatives in the eye and kicking them to the curb.
