BARACK, MEET YOUR NIGHTMARE
NEW YORK POST ^ | September 4, 2008 | rich lowry

Posted on 09/04/2008 7:59:33 AM PDT by george76

Last night, the question about Sarah Palin wasn't if she's risen too fast, but where she's been for so long.

She may have given the best speech of either political convention. She delivered a brilliantly written text flawlessly. Politicians who've been on the national stage for decades could do no better, and usually do worse.

Newsrooms across America must be in abject despair. The unlikely VP nominee the media hoped to crush out of the gate is unaffected by their condescension and scorn - and is bent on giving better than she takes.

Miss Congeniality isn't afraid to administer an old-fashioned beat-down. Annie Oakley brought a gun to a knife fight and made like the Obama-Biden ticket was a moose lazily meandering into her gun sights.

she said the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom is "lipstick." It wasn't just a cute line. She immediately began to prove it, starting with her killer line that being mayor of a small town is just like being a community organizer - except you have actual responsibilities.

She was merciless on Obama's elitism, scoring him for saying one thing about working-class voters in Scranton and another in San Francisco. By the end, you began to feel sorry for him for having been so thoroughly eviscerated by a woman and to wonder - how are Obama and Biden possibly going to handle her?

Palin was obviously comfortable laying body checks on Obama. In fact, she seemed to enjoy it.

Throughout, she never lost that ineffable quality that is literally priceless - her likability.

With: 1) A broken teleprompter

Can you imagine what would have happened in Obama’s speech if he had had a teleprompter malfunction?

Just heard the teleprompter began to malfunction during Guiliani and wasn’t working when Palin began per Fox news.

Joe Biden’s been put on the bench. The top of their ticket’s going to have to respond to this. He’s a humorless Chicago machine politician. She’s .... Elliot Ness. This is too perfect a send up. Biden can’t help OBama on the experience issue. And the part about making him flesh out what he did as a community organizer? He doesn’t want to do that. No way. That’s going to make him look like a career politician, one who created an “official” position of authority when in reality he had no authority whatsoever.

QuannelX is a community organizer. Okay.

Throughout, she never lost that ineffable quality that is literally priceless - her likability. There's no substitute in politics for being liked, and it's not something that can be faked or synthesized.

She is "authentic" and Americans are hungry for a non-career, authentic, normal, real person who will represent them. Palin will get HUGE cross-party votes, HUGE.

Kristinn posted a thread about it - one of them was a $100,000 contributer to Obambi:

I caught one little flub, that was handled so well and so smoothly that it hardly seemed like an error at all. She was talking about dependence on foreign oil and said something like “ and Venezuela might cut of their discoveries (that was the slip) and deliveries of those discoveries.” I think she said discoveries instead of deliveries but then seamlessly fixed it in mid sentence, without so much as batting an eyelash.

I am our County Chair for McCain and have to admit I was going through the motions because in my State he was going to win, but with Gov Palin on the ticket I want every last vote I can get for the ticket. I am totally energized now!

McCain in 08 could mean that it’s Palin in 2012. Had to feel a little sorry for Romney.

If there is anyone here at Free Republic that isn’t fully supporting McCain/Palin after last night....I just don’t understand you.

Then I will explain it for you. I am a conservative. McCain is a liberal. An open borders liberal, as a matter of fact. If the ticket were flipped I might put up with him as VP.

I am a conservative not a Republican. I will vote for Republicans IF they are conservative. If Bush's opponent had not been Hanoi John Kerry, I would not have voted in the last election.

Islam's war against the west will inevitably bring the US a nuclear strike. Putin is moving to regain as much of the Soviet empire as he can, which greatly adds to the likelihood of various Islamic factions obtaining the capacity to move jihad to this level. The persistent open borders are a hot potato that will utterly destroy the party in power when it happens. I prefer that the borders be closed - but barring that, let it be the liberals who are destroyed if we're not going to move to prevent it.

This is as obvious and foreseeable as the earlier attacks on September eleventh. Aside from the loss we all will have of family and friends WHEN not if this happens, I recognize that the party who emerges in power will be able to radically reshape government the United States. Many on the left foresee this as well, and are actively working to keep our defenses weak.

I therefore am willing to sacrifice important pieces to win the game. Winning the white house or congress are less important than closing the borders. A candidate who could win an office, at the cost of placing someone in office that the left could justifiably claim failed to aggressively defend America costs conservatism control of the board.

By the same token I will not move to save a socially liberal republican candidate merely to defeat the democrat. Sometimes control of the board is more important than saving every pawn.

If I get a liberal in office who votes liberal while claiming (unchallenged) to represent the party with a conservative platform, then my voice is even more unheard than if a liberal democrat is in office. It means that conservatives will vote for anyone who claims conservatism, even if they are to the left of Hillary Clinton. It also means that the Republican party did this eyes wide open, believing that I (and other conservatives) would vote for a yellow dog if it was a republican. Sorry RNC that only works with democrats.

I missed that. I admit to falling asleep, but not from lack of interest. I was just way too tired.

Are you sure it wasn't from a coma induced by listening to Carly Fiorina? Anyone catch her last night? I needed to find some Ben Stein sound bites to wake me up.

Here we go again; every article will mention the speech was written for her. She delivered that speech far better than Obama did his acceptance speech. I watched a little of it and all he did was look to the right and left teleprompters. I got the impression he was trying hard not to stammer like he does when he is not reading text. That guy is a train wreck without a teleprompter, but the impartial press is more concerned with Palin reading a speech.
