“Students in Mumbai help fight terror”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Three terror emails sent by Indian Mujahideen were traced to addresses in Mumbai, a city where unsecured wi-fi connections are now a huge threat.

With help from the police and IT experts, a students group is being formed, with a mission to make Mumbai wi-fi safe.

The session came soon after a third terror email was sent from Mumbai, within minutes of last week’s Delhi blasts. The email was sent once again by hacking into an unsecured wi-fi connection.

“People are not aware of the bad side of technology. We are educating ourselves on wi-fi security as these connections can easily be misused,” said Purav Shah, a student.

“We are getting training to secure wi-fi connection. We will also teach our juniors, friends and others in the community,” said Faranaz Kolatia, another student.

Technology experts believe that while unsecure wireless network is a big threat, newer technologies will soon take over.

“After wi-fi, there is going to be wi-max, which is wi-fi on steroids. If wi-fi has a range of 500 feet, wi-max has a range of 10 km. Technology vectors keep changing with time so you have to keep learning security mechanisms,” said IT expert Vijay Mukhi.

The Sheriff of Mumbai is a partner in the exercise and also the principal of the college. She believes student mobilisation is the best way to educate masses.”
